Nick's parents caught the flu when he was 10. His father died first, and there wasn't enough demand for unskilled labor where he grew up, so he joined a summer fair as a stable boy, hoping to earn enough to send back home to his mom. When his mother died a couple of years later, the fair took him in properly. Nick has spent the last 20 years of his life helping the family plan the routes of the summer fair, take care of the animals, and help with the fair set up and teardown.
The fairs break for the winter season, and until he was 18 Nick did odd jobs as a way to pay for his food and lodging. At 18, a grocer he was working for gave him a business proposition: would he run deliveries to families that were snowed in and couldn't get to town? Nick liked the work so much that he saved up and bought his own horse. He makes deliveries every winter, hoping to bring a bit of holiday hope and cheer to poor families without any other recourse.
In the days before the game, Nick came across a family with 11 children cursed by Father Midwinter. He promised them he'd spend this summer trying to find a way to lift the curse, no matter the cost.
