Born in what was once Innes in Berellia, Ulysses was ostensibly air faithful since birth. However, his parents, despite being allowed to live in Berellia because their faith is technically within the nature umbrella, were proud Innesian nationalists, & eventually, they left their home for Maraddon, where at least they could speak their minds.
Ulysses, for his part, took to ships from the first day he stepped on one. The boom of the sails as they filled with wind filled him with awe. By the age of 12, he had determined to slip onto a ship & see the world.
His own faith, though, brought to him other dreams: the legends of the flying ships of First Shem. On his third voyage, he met a fellow cabin boy named Roan Asher, who was a free spirit in love with adventure. The two quickly bonded, & soon, the idea to find or build an airship was all they lived for.
Uly & Roan brought their idea to their ship's owner, but the sour old man would have none of it. However, he did give them some business advice, & the two took it to heart. They made a deal with a strange shipping company called Egress Engineering to fund their quest. Enlisting a strange gargoyle who served as ship's cook, Remmerque, they set out. Years passed.
They began their quest for an airship by going back to the Berellian highlands, seeking information from the air priests there. Here, they learned of the magical stone sky peridot, which, when set into metal, would make it lighter than air.
They next began to seek out a proper hull. This brought them to Akazad, where their quest was directed through many different groups: the streets of Pellforth, where a footpad child named Glipper Emerson tried to pick their pockets & ended up joining them; the Seafarers' Guild, where they met master helmsman Buckston Burlak; the wind elven air church, where a newly vested priest named Father Dyovaniir joined them; the gnomish colonies, where the crafty Zort Iplewit literally catapulted himself into their party; the vast Plains of Vanui, where a young buck centaur named Shaamen Yorchar latched himself onto their crew; & the Sisters, where a peacock named Joseph Hollis, seeking his fortune as a bard, asked to accompany them.
By the end of their stay in Akazad, they had a small crew, a ship's hull, a few sky peridots, & a map to an site of ancient technology in then Atanaxus. The mad crew of adventurers took sail & came to the coasts of Taggarus. Within the dangerous empire, they met with an aarakocra tribe that taught them much about flight, & one, Ptur!ek K'na, could not resist their invitation to join them. They moved on to the heart of the continent.
There, they found a trove of lost technology, but still, they hadn't enough sky peridot to craft into their ship. Their next stop was Kren'atan's vast mountain ranges, where a cephalan scientists named Montanar Bulswyk, wind troll named Xanug Zul'Andar, & a mine full of peridot were waiting for them.
Six months of hard work later, they had an airship, but it belonged to EE. They devised a plan to own it by auctioning off its services in order to gain money to buy it, & soon, they were working hard.
