The Court of Hate is a many splintered thing. The Goblinfather's progeny mostly keep their own court, called the Court of Hideousness or the Court of Rage, and the progeny of the Masked God are split into various smaller groups. Ismuth, always a weaker being, kept to himself, avoiding either court's intrigues for the most part, neither a member of Horng's great kingdom nor of the champion's sprawling, chaotic lifestyle. He sought power from an alternate route to power, feeling out his cousins in the court of Thorns. There, he met Rex Cuniaid, a beautiful and charismatic leader who took him under wing. Like a weak boy taken in by the popular kids at school, Ismuth became utterly devoted to Rex, hating him and his kind the entire time. And yet, he was always to do the unthinkable for his mentor.

When the time came to Usurp power, Ismuth lead the way. He did not hesitate to dive through into nigh certain doom for Rex, to prove he was as powerful and useful as any other ally, and for that he was rewarded richly...
