Born a streetrat on Merukis, he stowed away on his first ship when he was 8. He sailed under the the Red Pirate, immortal reever legend, for 4 years, working his way up from deckhand to cabin boy, surviving long where many fell. By 12, he discovered the secret of the immortal Red Pirate (think Dread Pirate Roberts) & became one of his Trusted Men. By 16, he was first mate, being groomed to replace the Red Pirate.

After many long years, at 18, he came to captaincy under the legendary immortal Red Pirate, & subsequently killed him, becoming the legendary reever, feared throughout the seas, as the one who slew the immortal Red Pirate.

After another 5 years, he united most of the reever crews of Merukis, save the reevers of the sea fortress Dungarw. For another 2 years, he warred with his rivals & reeved the seas. Then, the Jorgendish raider Jodha Hrown sacked Dungarw & killed everyone there, only to disappear afterward. Laird took the opportunity to unite the reevers of Merukis & begin seeking alliance with the reevers of the Island Bridge, the raiders of Jorgendun, & the Taggaran coastal raiders. After a matter of months, they were his.

He sacked every coastal city in his territory by the end of the year, stealing an ancient Tara'hinian crown from Port Baraus. On his way back to Merukis, he decided to attack the Western Maraddonian fleet. In the battle, he nearly killed Merian Dremholz Battisto, but was stopped when the powder hold on the ship blew. Both of them ended up in the water, being rescued by their own side. He sailed then to Merukis, where he summoned his captains & crowned himself Emperor of the Reever Sea.
