Of Kerupennish stock, Klaus's family was keen on the military, & so, as a young man, he joined the Maraddonian Imperial Army. While there, he showed some promise & caught the eye of Roald Argent, a young officer on his very first assignment. Being older & more attuned to the ways of the world, Klaus offered a few key points of advice while on patrol & gained Roald's gratitude. However, Klaus was transferred shortly thereafter to special forces training, having also caught the eye of other officers.

A few years passed, & Klaus found he wasn't quite cut out for the special forces--his fighting skill was exemplary, his intelligence was unquestionable, but his poor stealth & lack of specialization disqualified him from anything other than a training post. Rather than spend his days training others or doing routine patrols as a low level army officer, he wrote a letter to Roald, trying to get transferred to the Island Bridge. Roald, however, sent the letter along to his father, Damon, who asked Klaus if he would be interested in joining his house guard, the Silver Torches.

Klaus agreed readily & was promptly made a sergeant of the Overt Branch. He has since served Damon & his family as a guard in one way or another for the last five years, save for during the Civil War, during which time he asked permission to transfer back into the army to serve his country. During that time, he earned a few medals, killed a few bugs, & evaded the plague. Afterward, he rejoined the Torches.

After the war, Klaus rose to the rank of lieutenant in the Torches, to fill some of the void left by the war & in honor of his service. He works as one of Damon's personal guards, a code meaning he spends his time protecting covert agents in the field.

Upon Arlie's recommendation, he was raised to a Captain in the Torches, which carries with it command over the special forces & Imperial Guard. When two of his cadets fell in Tamarnthek, he decided, & Damon gave permission, to recruit the odd veterans from the special forces.

• Hunny: a comfort to have on my side
• Jack: when I was a kid, I saw him play in Malladin. What a good night that was
• Kashaji: now that's a soldier
• Little Wing: funny lookin' robin
• Magnum: I know I've seen him before somewhere
• Manny: it watches the others in such a strange way, I'm wary of it
• Sue: he seems sharp, if a little off-putting
• Airship crew: a solid bunch, definitely becoming less over-protective
• Cadets: raw but talented. I was sorry to see Wade & Quova fall, but that's life in the army
• Francis, Itoh, & Loash: have the experience to survive & the madness to weather this
• Odellino: And I thought the athak was weird...
• Cogswell: don't trust mages so much, but he's all right
• Civitello: a dangerous bastard
• Rex: that's better left to more powerful folk to deal with, but if I have to...
