The great composer of Impossible Music left the realm of athaks shortly after his rival did, in a bout of pride and foolishness. He sought out life in the non-void world to find new complexities. Unfortunately, what he instead found was cruelties: the first people he showed his work to didn't even understand it. When he went next to musical scholars, he was laughed at. He was told his work was "practically gnomish," so he went to the gnomes.

He sought first the bell gnomes, whose musical devices merely scared him. He then tried the storm gnomes, but their obsession with energy was beyond even athak society. Wind gnomes seemed utterly uninterested in wind instruments, and lost gnomes were too aptly named.

Then, he met a half-mad maker gnome named Katzenheim, notorious for his brilliant instruments. The next thing he knew, he was chained by apparatuses he could not fathom and forced to write music for this strange gnome.

He spent months, if not years, enslaved to this drooling lunatic, until someone finally discovered the secret of Katz's "Composing Engine" and set poor Mux free. Sue, of all athaks, showed up in some cave in Berellia and pulled him out of hellish servitude, then made Katzenheim Sue's servant.

Mux was convinced: his penance for his foolish pride would be to help his old rival and now savior in his quest.

Through moons, world empires, and the planes, Mux stuck by his friend, through religious mania and dark depression, through wild danger and ineffable wonder, through blood and ash and glory and hope, until a strange moment when he felt flame, then nothing. For the space of an instant, he wandered a wasteland of trials defined by the sins on his soul, then...

Silver light filled his sight, and he awoke, whole, to the Summer Country. A sense of vibrancy filled him, and he found renewed lust for life around him.
