Champions are, like traditional champion, ones who defend the honor of their sphere in the field. To become a Champion, one must pass the Thirteen Ordeals of the Mountain of Trials. According to the Law, there may only be 48 Champions at a time, how many in each Pantheon determined by the number of Divines:

• Alabaster Shield: 6
• Sable Night: 6
• Obsidian Obelisk: 6
• Viridian Pillars: 7
• Velour Mantle: 7
• Vermeil Blade: 7
• Sienna Scales: 3

Before this Law took effect, the Champions numbered 16 per greater Pantheon (Good, Neutral, Evil). In the aftermath of this Law, the Pantheons have yet (as of Age of Hours) to sort things out.

If one takes the Mountain's Trials during a time when the Champion's slots are full, one becomes a Servant. If one takes the Mountain's Trials again, one then vies for a Championship slot, having to face the Champion they want to overtake. If they choose a sphere not taken on their second time up, the Mountain destroys them in accordance with the Law.

If a Champion should fall, the Mountain guides any who climb it to replace that Champion in some way (simply to choose a sphere of the same pantheon, usually). If more than a year has passed since a Champion fell with no one to replace them, the Mountain may well take desperate measures to force any who climb to take an appropriate sphere. This can be especially dangerous.

If a Champion then takes the Mountain's Trials, they are destroyed unless an opening is available amongst the Gods. The only Champions to take advantage of this are Hollow Jack and Genfyllid.
