Growing up in a small family in a modest mountain dwarf clan, Draman was always expected to be a smith. He grew up learning metal working from his uncles and father and grandfather, like any mountain dwarf. He made fine shoes for horses, fine tools for other craftsmen, fine jewelry for women of wealth, and fine weapons for warriors. He was skilled and respected.

Too skilled, in fact. The Earth Church came seeking him. Bearing prophecy and holy writ, they came looking for a dwarf capable of forging the greatest weapon of all time. They sought such a man, for they knew that in the Messianic War, there existed a chance to slay the Webweaver and rid his influence on the shadows in the caves.

Draman was humble, and at first, he refused their pleas, saying it was not he they sought. He preferred to remain in his clan and marry his sweetheart Durias. But day after day, they came to him, asking him to reconsider. With them traveled a deep dwarf named Duerghast Baurgrah, a skilled smith known the world over for his fine tools and weapons and jewelry. Duerghast brought with him three spirit-forged rings--one of wealth, one of home, and one of earth.

Seeing the beauty in Durias, Duerghast decided he would woo her, bringing her with him when he left to fulfill the prophecy. He gave her first the ring of wealth, promising her that it would bring her a fortune. If she did not have her fortune within a week of owning it, he would withdraw his request to court her.

Six days passed, and no wealth came to her. Draman felt relief, and on the seventh day, he sent her a mithril necklace and ring to show his love for her, inadvertently fulfilling Duerghast's promise.

Next, Duerghast gave her the ring of home, promising her it would bring her a new home. If the new home had not been given her by the end of the month, he would withdraw his request to court her.

Three weeks passed, and no home came to her. Draman believed the ring had failed, and in the fourth week, he showed her the house he built for her, again inadvertently fulfilling Duerghast's promise.

Next, Duerghast gave her the ring of earth, promising her it would bring her a mountain. If the mountain did not come to her by the end of the year, he would withdraw his request.

Having seen both the promises come true, Draman chose to give up his courtship and join the Earth Church as they requested. He took up his smithing hammer, his tools, and his small possessions and left with them. Duerghast followed, promising to return with the mountain.

The two smiths traveled the world with the Church, helping heroes of the Last War by making them weapons on incredible power, some almost the rival of Gifts. These legendary weapons are now known as the baur-forged weapons, and they are valued by warriors and collectors even on Second Shem. The ones that have spirits forged into them are considered potent for their magical properties and craftsmanship, but the ones without are works of wonder, for there is no magic in them, yet they keep their keen edges.

Finally, the two came to the Mountain of Trials, and the time of reckoning was at hand. The two climbed the Mountain and came face to face in the Trial of Combat. Draman refused to fight, risking his eternal soul, but Duerghast assaulted him, forcing him to defend himself. Steady as stone, Draman countered every blow Duerghast leveled against him, ending his opponent not by assault but by patience. Duerghast's heart gave out after hours of attack failed to land a blow.

Draman came down the mountain and walked back to Akazad, ignoring oceans and more to return to his love. He reached his mountain home almost a year later to find Durias had fallen ill and died shortly before he arrived. In mourning, he raised a mountain as her tomb, inadvertently fulfilling Duerghast's promise.
