When the Champions of Hope killed Michael Vane, a battle ensued in the forces of darkness for the spot as Champion. The Devil favored one of his contracts. The Prophetess preferred a Weaver, one who would be subtle and cunning, not mad and malicious. The demonic factions preferred demon-worshippers or their own contracts, and Vane's old Servitors all vied for the spot. The Webweaver, however, stayed out of the process, allowing them to work it out amongst themselves.
The Devil bought off most demonic factions, the Prophetess bullied or killed the Servitors, and the other factions became irrelevant. A subtle "war" was fought, fervently, secretly, with poison, politics, and betrayal, until a brave follower of despair attempted to steal the spot as the Champion of Misery. The fool did not make it down the Mountain, but their soul fell to the Hells and suffers there still for its brash move.
The Devil and the Prophetess began to talk, under pressure from the Webweaver, but no agreement was come to. Frustrated, the Webweaver sent out his subtle tendrils and spoke unto one of his lower servants, the Marshall of the long defunct Ender's Corps, telling him that the third Ender Gift would be his if he took the Mountain and arose the master of the mortal armies of darkness. Kharanian, a Palhuric ender of some skill and power, agreed, and went to the Mountain with his 13 Generals.
He climbed it without much issue, and came down the true Ender Marshall, Champion of Darkness, leader of the dark armies.
He was born to an ender and a nymphish slave, during a campaign in the area. His father, an Ender Corps soldier, kept the slave as a fucktoy for ages, but she died giving birth to Kharanian. Not wanting to care for a child, his father gave Kharanian to a pair of camp followers, telling them to raise a soldier.
Kharanian was named for the river he was born by and the town he was born in, giving him a distinct name that is a mix of old minotaur and draconic. He grew up following armies, learning the blade from soldiers, politics from those best at it--the whores--and life from quartermasters, engineers, and other military sorts.
When he was fifteen, he became a soldier himself, learning the ways of the press and fold, the rank and file, and by the time he was 21, he was a captain from sheer genius and skill. He used his empathy to know his soldiers in the heat of battle, and he used his wounding to defend himself in the press. He ended up a general by the age of 27, where he surprised his commander and fellows with his cunning. Within the year, he had killed the marshall and staged a coup to take his place. From there, it was a short walk to Champion.
