As a footpad, Luke Longfoot was born with a deep seeded wanderlust. He was, indeed, born on the move. His parents were in a runaway wagon at the time his mother was in labor, and it was at the moment of his birth that the team was brought under control.

In his travels, Luke experienced two major revelations: the first was, no matter where he went, food was the most important and often a scarce resource. He often went hungry, or, when he was a child, his parents did. The other was that there were an awful large number of fields that could be growing food that weren't. As an adult, he took to buying and selling seeds wherever he went, and when he found an empty field, he would plant something in it--usually an apple tree.

As he traveled, he would come back to the trees he planted over the years and find many bearing fruit. These he would pick and sell or give away as he went.

In those days, the ending days of the Age of Growth, there were many who questioned the existence of the gods and spoke of the hard times to come, and Luke knew that his duty was to help keep the world planted and fed. He began to look for ways to expand his little quest, and took on acolytes and followers. Other footpads joined him. Roma tribes blessed his name and spread the word. Other halflings and pseudohalflings took up his cause. The harvest church declared him a living saint.

Eventually, he realized he was growing old, and that without help, he would have to stop moving. He went to the nearest Harvest church and asked advice, and he was encouraged to seek higher power on the Mountain. When he got there, he found himself not getting the Servanthood he expected, but ascending to Championhood.

When he came down, he chose from amongst his followers and fellows Servitors, and started the Planters.
