There are three steps to effective angelology:
1. Contact angels.
2. Serve angels.
3. Ask angels for help.
There are many ways to contact angels, but most require access to a different power source (magic, faith, etc.). There are a few ways, however, that require no great esoteric knowledge and are much more potent:
- Acts of genuine kindness - these are difficult to take advantage of because performing an act of kindness with the intent of contacting an angel fails the "genuine" requirement. However, if one has been extremely kind for no reason but to be kind, one might be able to reach out and speak to an angel in the few moments after the action.
- Sacrificing a pleasure - giving up something you dearly enjoy for the sake of speaking to an angel can have positive results. It must not be something sinful, nor should it be a sin to give it up.
- Submitting to service - if one has prior knowledge of an angel, one may find a task that would be pleasing to that angel and perform it for an appropriate amount of time (varies by task and angel), and once completed, the angel might appear.
- Being in need - this is very rare, and almost always the result of metaphysical danger such as demons, abominations, or the undead, and an extremely good person falling into their clutches.
Once a person has contacted one angel, however, they will be "marked." This mark is metaphysical and not visible, but unless they commit grievous sins, they will be able to call upon an angel of the type they met, and they can often use this connection to request to meet with other kinds of angels.
Serving angels usually requires a bit of interaction with the angel first. One must find out the specific task the angel is bound to, and then find ways to be useful toward that task. The more useful one is, the more "Grace" they will build up with that angel.
Once one has Grace built up with an angel, they may essentially pray to that angel for specific, miraculous aid, and they will often receive it--unless the aid is intended for ill use.
