"I would let the whole world be destroyed for the sake of the truth."

Known for his dedication to the truth, Reverend Bellerein is a close friend of Emperor Maraddon despite the Emperor's skill at deception. He has a keen political mind as well as a will you could break swords on.

As a child, Arthur's mother taught him the importance of honesty, encouraging him to always tell the truth, no matter the cost. At the age of 9, he saw his mother struggle to deal with his father's infidelities & deceptions & her subsequent suicide. He ran away from home.

On the streets of Maraddon City, he lived in the famed flower markets, running errands for the peddlers & florists & flower ladies. One day, about the age of 11, he was paid to deliver a bouquet of flowers to a wealthy noblewoman. On his way to the delivery, some boys playing in the streets distracted him & he ended up not just being late for the delivery due to his playing, but alos losing the bouquet. Instead of running off & getting lost in the turmoil of the city, he went back to the vendor & confessed.

The vendor, impressed with the unheard of honesty of a street urchin, made him work to repay the debt of the lost flowers, forgoing the usual savage beating a street urchin would usually get. During the next few months, Arthur's new boss sent word to the Truth Church of a possible charity case. Once the debt was repaid, the vendor made arrangements, & Arthur was taken in by the temple.

For the next thirty years, Arthur worked hard at his new found faith. At the age of 19, he became a deacon. By the age of 23, he was a priest. By 34, he was elevated all the way to bishop, workin dilligently to effect the policies of the Empire as well as to affect the inner workings of his own church. The high priest of the time belonged to the sect of truth faithful known as Liars, who believe that lies are merely the other side of the same coin as truth. They find both to be holy. Arthur, being of the Truthspeaker sect, was staunchly against the policies laid forth by this administration & fought against it. He gained much popularity in his sect, & when the time came for a new cardinal to be elected, he was their candidate. At the age of 40, he was the youngest cardinal in the church.

At this time, he learned of his father's whereabouts. The man, in his old age, had turned to the faith of his deceased wife & become a deacon. On his death bed, he & Arthur reconciled.

As a cardinal, his duties changed. He first met the Emperor in those years, though their friendship was far from forming--merely handshakes after a church service, nothing more. Arthur lead a great push within the church to sway their policies abck to the Truthspeaker sect, & by the time he was 47, he had not just succeeded in his goal, his old opponents in the other sects had come to respect his firm & fair nature. Despite being philosophically opposed, they supported him for the position as successor to the current High Priest, who was falling ill.

Upon his inauguration as High Priest of Truth in the Empire of Maraddon, Arthur was invited to a quiet discussion with Emperor Maraddon (a staunch believer in the slightly obscure Mirror sect--those who believe a lie is a reflection of the truth, & thus, really just an odd way of telling the truth). The two, despite their differences, became fast friends, & the Truth Church's relationship with the government of the Empire took on a firmer hold.

When the Empire began to crumble, Arthur, aware of the situation in so many ways, began to work closely with the Emperor in forming several plans. He joined the Violet Cloaks, the Emperor's secret group of close friends & allies who would join him in seeking out Chryandemus. When the ranks of the Truespeakers (the Violet Cloaks' name, ironically) were scattered by various attacks, Arthur helped Princess Marilyna & High Priest Gaspar Tove escape. After Caspian & Aldo cured Gaspar, Arthur, Marilyna, & Gaspar set out soon after for Ienova, where the last surviving remnants of the Imperial government had been moved.
