Letters

Addressed to: Orleans Monteleone, dropped off at his office in Merukis, wax sealed with a seal he gave her.

Hello Orleans,

How are you? How is business? Have my letters been reaching you? Last I heard from you, (8 years ago if memory serves) you were expanding your business on Palhur. Has that project completed yet? I'm sorry that we haven't seen each other recently. I've missed our lazy summer caravans and voyages. 20 years ago I could fend you off and match you in playful banter, but by now you'll likely run circles around me. What is it you told me? "Galdunic men age like their wines." I'll need to develop my palette.

I'd tell you all about what has happened to me since my last letter, but I'm not sure I have enough ink. I'm one of 12 Last Elves who has been given a holy quest to try and save what remains of our people. Life has been a blur-- I've met the World Tree and countless other Aeonians. I've seen more GIfts in the last year than my whole life to date. There's so much happening-- it'd be much easier to talk about this all in person.

Fortunately, the Goddesses has given us the means to meet again. We have a ship that would make your eyes sparkle. We can cross oceans in hours and we can outrun all the fastest airships. We can travel underwater and to the moons without issue. Send word to Ailenea when you get this letter to let me know when/where I can meet you. I'll talk our captain into detouring his route.

Hoping we see each other soon, Rindacsa

My good friend Baldassare,

How are you? How is Demopolis? It has been at least 10 years since last we spoke, has it changed? Does that vineyard just outside the city still make our favorite wine? If so, you must have an extra glass on my account. Things change much too quickly in the human cities. Friends and wine must not be taken for granted.

My life has taken quite the unexpected turn. As you know, a sickness is ravaging all the elven people. I've joined up with an expedition to try and save the elven race. I'm actually writing to you from Madiziar, of all the places, in the heart of the Shemir libraries. I've been given the task of finding outcast elves and elves from dead races, and seeing if I can recruit their help for our cause. When you met me I was a poor girl who could not feed herself. Who would have thought I would be here now? These are desperate times indeed.

Last night we had the most unbelievable dinner audience with the Alpha Shemir. He looks /old/, Baldassare. Even here in the city, you do not see old Shemir. Tomorrow we head off to see the World Tree via dog sleds. Luckily, those I travel with are well enough off that I haven't had to use the lessons you taught me all those years ago.

I've included some poems I copied for you while researching in the shemir libraries, I know you were always a fan.

Stay well fed and warm, and may your generosity return to you,

Rindacsa

My dear friend Istui,

No doubt by now you have heard about the ceremony performed by High Priestess Ail’vieria this Ailaerim the 1st. During the ceremony, the Silver mother selected 13 elves (one from each race) with a quest to save and preserve each of our species.

I am writing you now because I have a matter of emergency. I was there in attendance. At first I thought it was there to simply witness a recitation of prophecy. Instead (my hand shakes and refuses to write this, it is so absurd) I was chosen by the Silver Mother for this task. I am to be the representative for both Valhonia and the Wanderers, and I will play a large role in shaping the destiny of our race.

Istui, I do not doubt the Silver Mother's wisdom, but I do not know if I can bear this responsibility. I can feel the weight of it pressing in around my shoulders. Is it even possible for one woman to represent everyone in an entire race? Together we are a ley line of controversy. To make matters worse, I fear that many of elves will object to their representation. I am at the periphery of both Valhonian and Wanderer cultures, the Vewellian representative is a better magic theorist than I could hope to be, and the Dwonnic is one of the most mild mannered and humble elves I have ever met.

We are ill-equipped for the task at hand. We have already met with various heads of state, and we leave for the Summer Courts tomorrow. None amongst us has any diplomatic training save what little you taught me, and I only know enough to fear the political storm that looms above. I am in over my head. I wish that you were here so I could consult your advice.

Magic plays a large role in the ceremony that will save our species. You should know that an official representative for Simon Academy (Kurthur Algreng) has stated that we shall receive no help from his institution unless we agree to end the existence of Vewellians. In truth I suspect that he is not a true diplomat and was rather speaking for himself. I certainly hope the official diplomatic policy for Simon Academy is more nuanced than calling the Valhonian representative an "abomination" and calling for the genocide of an entire Elven race before lending their support.

In any case, we will need all the magical knowledge that Shem has to offer. Valhonians and Wanderers will need to come together to to share their knowledge and secrets. If we don't reunite our people now, we might never have another chance.

I hope this letter finds you well, Istui. Despite our distance, you are close to my heart. Aist-melme (translated, Blessed be)

Rindacsa
