Ennasrion Quilon Mailliel Lamarn Najmakhir Ardil Ethkron Farolan ("
Nas")
Nas was the youngest of three brothers to escape the collapse of their congregate. Three score ships - some large, some small - raised their sails to find new homes. Two score of those ships dared the risky voyage to Shem. None but one were able to evade the asterian pirates and land on the planet. Due to damage sustained, the landing was fatal to all the crew and passengers, save those in the helm. These three were the sons of Mailiel: Palyrus, the Commander and eldest, Sothasil, the Seer and middle, and Ennasrion, the Navigator and youngest. After giving rites to the dead, the brothers quickly found their way to a planetary elven community, only to find that it, too, had collapsed. The second they found was on the verge of collapse, they fought the refugees there and escaped. They fought with each other. They agreed to seek their answers separately. Palyrus sought to join an elven community with the strength to weather the mysterious troubles. Sothasil sought tomes and wise council to explain the troubles. And Ennasrion sought a land and a people suited to building a new community.

- The sixth name comes from the teacher on the first voyage: Apprentice to master navigator Ardil Kyenon
- The fifth name comes from the home vessel upon commission: Captain of the blessed ship Najmakhir, nee Navigator of the schooner Uzmarn
- The fourth name comes from the matriarch at birth: vassal to Lamarn Yarrion
- The third name comes from the pairing of mother and father at birth: Mailliel, Mailiriel Farolan and Llielon Farolan
- The second name is dictated by the birth constellation (mostly of the Twelve): Quilon ("Singer")
- The first name is given by the mother at birth.
Most of the time, Kyellezhians go by the first and eighth names. Four other names are given to Kyellezhians which Nas has not yet received. The ninth name is agreed upon at marriage by the spousal pairing. The tenth name is chosen on the eve of a great personal victory. The eleventh name is given by the family on the eve of a great personal tragedy. The twelveth name is given by those who are left behind to describe the downfall and death. Some Kyellezhians will sometimes further expand their names by hyphenation, to honor former spouses, vessels, home ports, or matriarchs, adoptive parents, or multiple victories and tragedies.

Ranks of the Kyellezhian Royal Merchant Navy
- Admiral - commands a fleet of ships
- Captain - highest command station on a ship
- Lieutenant - intermediate command stations
- Ensign - non-command stations
Each rank has 3 classes, save Captain. There are no non-commissioned officers aboard Kyellezhian craft, though any station may have an apprentice. All stations require a long apprenticeship before a commission will be offered at any rank. Apprentices perform the tasks of officers, but under close supervision. It is very common for officers to apprentice each other in stations other than that which they were commissioned in.
Common Kyellezhian Naval Stations (with typical rank)
- Commander (Cp) - highest ranking officer; absolute authority on ship, first-in-command, commands entire ship
- Astrologer (En1c) - "good luck charm", rarely used, not a command station, but reports directly to commander
- Navigator (Lt1c) - highest ranking sailor, responsible for charting course, usually second-in-command, commands steering division
- Ship's Hand (En) - moves the ship
- Anchorer (En) - creates artificial gravity on the ship, holds the ship in place when necessary
- Quartermaster (Lt1c) - highest ranking trader, responsible for supplies, usually third-in-command, commands trade and life support divisions
- Trade Division
- Trader (En) - conducts trade
- Life Support Division
- Ship's Cook (En1c) - prepares meals
- Ship's Well (En1c) - tends water-purifying algae
- Ship's Breath (En1c) - tends air-purifying fungi
- Ship's Seer (Lt) - highest ranking (usually only) magic/faith user, able to relieve any rank for esoteric reasons, commands esoteric division
- Adept (En) - practices magic or faith
- Ship's Surgeon (Lt) - highest ranking (usually only) medic, able to relieve any rank for medical reasons, commands medical division
- Medic (En) - practices medicine
- Smithing Master (Lt1c) - highest-ranking (sometimes only) smith, responsible for condition of ship, commands repair division
- Woodsmith (En) - astroarborist, mends the hull
- Crystalsmith (En) - kyellezhian technician, mends the helm
- Gunnery Master (Lt) - highest-ranking gunner, advises captain on tactics, commands gunnery division
- Gunner (En) - fires projectiles at enemy ships
- Dock's Hand (En) - transfers cargo on and off ship
- Master of Arms (Lt) - highest-ranking marine, commands assault division
- Marine (En) - conducts combat hand-to-hand
It is quite common for an officer to have multiple non-command stations, and for non-command stations to be shared among many officers. Since the Ship's Hand must be alert at all times, this duty is typically shared among the entire crew while in transit. Most officers will serve as Traders while in port. Anchorer, requiring little more than a calm spirit, is considered "light duty", and is shared among the lower ranks. Gunnery, life support, esoterica, medicine, and smithing all require highly specialized skills, and are not so easily shared, though some require more dedication than others. Command stations are never shared, though each may have sub-commanders depending on the composition of the crew. It is considered unprofessional for a ship to have a single officer with multiple command stations. By tradition, any competent astrologer is offered an ensign commission on a ship with no other astrologer, and consequently virtually every Kyellezhian ship has exactly one astrologer; since those skills are almost never actually used, most astrologers apprentice in and eventually take on other roles before long.
The Kyllezhian helm, or "ship's heart" are the source of the powers of the steering and gunnery divisions on a ship. Other roles may use esoterica, but it is not related to the helm. All listed powers are astrobiological in nature; both aetherial and asharic energies are employed through scientific principles. Kyellezhian crystals are resevoirs of astral aether. A helm is a system of Kyellezhian crystals arranged in such a way that it forms an engine which accumulates astral aether and can also direct it to control gravity. The exterior surface of a helm responds to a sailor's ashar, which flows into circuits in the interior to convert aether into gravitation. Kyellezhian ships are built around these helms, and have crystal veins that allow sailors to interact with a ship's helm from various places in the ship. All sailors learn the basic operations of simulating gravity, moving the ship, stopping the ship, and operating tethered longboats. Most also learn the "trick" of signaling other helms over vast distances. These five capabilities are referred to as "sailing" and its practicioners are "sailors". Gunnery is a more demanding art that uses the helm to create a gravity "shunt" localized around a specific object to propel it along a defined path. Gunners, after establishing basic sailing abilities, first learn how to shunt cargo to and from the ship, then advance to combat gunnery. All seven capabilities are based on gravity manipulation, and it is thus considered the hallmark of the Kyellezhian navy.

Kyellezhian military operations tend to be hit-and-run affairs, relying on their gunners and using explosive shot to destroy enemy hulls and flechettes to maim and kill crew, and other Kyellezhian sailors equipped with bows or boomerangs. When short-range combat is expected, heavily-armed and armored Kyellezhian marines are deployed to the front with halberd, shillelagh, and vambrace spurs. The most elite veterans among gunners and marines form the Kyellezhian Dragoons, a dozen warriors reporting directly to the queen, who wear garish pink armor that bristles with astral aether and acts as a personal helm.
All ships in the Kyellezhian navy have a registry starting with "HMS", for "Her Majesty's Ship", referring to the Queen of Kyellezhe. Helms adapt to the size of the ship in which they are installed, but are exceedingly difficult to construct. Therefore, although Kyellezhian ships span a range of sizes, none are ever built with more than one helm. Compared to ships of the Kyellezhian Navy, the Najmakhir is rather small. The Uzmarn, a typical ship, was twice as large (longer and with a third deck), and a ship of the line can be several times the size of the Uzmarn (longer still and with up to twelve decks).
