Description

???

History

She lives in Heligwald (the Holy Roman Empire, i.e. Germany in the 1500s) near the river Auflau (based on the Zorn). The community she lives in is called Niedflach, for the low, flat terrain on the east bank. The area nearest the river is swampy on the west side, but on the east side where she lives, there are pastures and even some hills. She lives with her mother Vatn and her grandmother Liepmayt. Niedflach is near to the small town of Karmburg. Downriver from Karmburg is the larger port city Althoff.

She sells her wares in Nordfestburg (Hamburg), Füßzuerst (Koln), Starkeström (Mainz) (all in Heligwald), Cornuto (Turin), Piegarsi (Genoa) (both in the Talunese city-states, think Italy), Nabijkode (Antwerp) in Emmoi (Flanders). She does not sell in Althoff, for the local burgrave (lord-mayor), whose domain includes Karmburg and Niedflach, named Ordulf, is an eagle folk who answers to Duke Wirnt, a human who employs witchfinders. His most fearsome witchfinder is a strange looking figure named Meinward, who seems to be human but not quite. He does not come around your area, but you've heard enough stories to fear him.

Niedflach is a small area with three farms, a mill, and a nearby ford.

Ecru thread from Tum's memory 14

God's Eye style blocking charm woven with a time strand (The spell of blocking is woven into the charm again, weaving strands of tangible temporal aether, creating a charm that creates a barrier made of temporal aether that extends as far as the threads of the charm itself. You can tell charm is very powerful, but it can probably only be used once. You're not sure what it will do, but the barrier it creates will definitely interact with time somehow)

Bearded Reedling Mask: allows Runa to see from the perspective of one person within visual range. Her WIL vs theirs, willing or not. If she does this, she gains a bonus to any and all spells, including singing the loops, weaving a prediction, hexing someone, binding, or warding. It is effectively giving her the power to "ride" someone (see voevla page for more info).

Prophecies

Runa has made seven prophecies:
  • Siclebert and Magneberga would have twins when things got better for them. This came true last spring.
  • Taudisca would be free of her abusive husband Rambaldo when he was bested and killed by someone with a greater weapon than his swords. This has yet to happen.
  • Clario would fall ill and have to rely on his servants for his work. This came true within weeks.
  • Zeisolf would survive his long voyage to Mahad and come back with great stories. This came true.
  • Jódís would travel the world once she found the right horse; she instead broke her back. This seems to have failed to come true.
  • Andl would get into university after the storms came. This came true, as Andl decided to disguise herself as Hansel.
  • The seventh prophecy, an attempt to prophesy for Ysentrud, came out a garbled mess that no one seems to be able to interpret.

Motivations

Relationships

Family
  • Vatn, her mother
  • Leipmayt, her grandmother
Animals
  • 30ish sheep
  • Hartnäcke Sam (f) and Unhöflich Sam (m), farm cats
  • Prenkus, donkey, used for work
  • Cletus, sheepdog
  • Herze, Gedanke, Seele, and Schnabel, 4 ravens
Ancestral Stories
  • Bolla, ancestor who came from Jorgendheim to central Jesenya
  • Rannveig, ancestor (great-great-grandmother?) who found the littany needle in the mud
  • Phaethusa, a distant ancestor who lived in Stayflies (Greece) who saved a city from invasion by wrecking ships with her song
  • Tielo, one of the early Jesenyan ancestors who lived as a man and worked as a silversmith; he had a human woman as a lover, and he made her a silver harp that played so beautifully, their harmony turned them permanently into birds and they flew away to be together forever
Flussjungfrau
The Mission
  • Healing the time loops and restoring the world is needed to end the suffering of Chronur and the world. I am responsible for aiding this

Every few years, there are gatherings of flussjungfrau, and from among these, she is closest to the following:
  • Kaetherlin, a harmonist who leads most of their rituals.
  • Himildrud, a shieldmaiden who is renowned as a heroine.
  • Jódís, an equestrian who wanted to travel the world. Runa's prophecy that she would seems to have failed, as Jódís broke her back in a riding accident.
  • Wulftrude and Hyndla, two huntresses (one a vadaszno and one a saoiste) who are lovers and who take care of Jódís.
  • Henecota, a longwalker who fears persecution for her faith.
  • Friedlinde, an herbalist who lives in the forests near Starkeström.
  • Andl, a scholar who wants to get into university and so pretends to be a boy named Hansel. Andl has been so intent on going to university one day that Runa secretly prophesied that she would after a great storm hit the area. One such hit a fortnight later, and shortly thereafter, Andl was accepted. Andl goes by Andl among the flussjungfrau.
Locals
  • Burgrave Ordulf of Althoff, eagle man lord-mayor who serves a violent Duke
  • Duke Wirnt, human lord who employs witchfinders and believes in eugenics
  • Witchfinder Meinward, strange-looking human who hunts and executes witches, believes in eugenics
  • Farmer and widower Ricmuda, his five sons, and his sister-in-law and probable lover Mizzi, dog folk who raise sheep and pigs, in Niedflach. Ricmuda's wife died of illness some years ago. Her sister moved after the funeral to help out with the boys and the farm. It's clear that over the years, they have started being together, but they have never formalized it or talked about it publicly. Mizzi has come to Runa more than once for prophylactic herbs, so she knows she's sleeping with Ricmuda, but no one talks about it. No one, not even Ricmuda, can tell his five sons apart anymore. They're rambunctious, all in their teens (youngest is 14, oldest is 19, they all look the same and have the same build), and they keep busy working the farm or roughhousing, hunting, fishing, etc. Most just call them "Ric's boys".
  • Ferryman and fisher Gisilbehrt, heron man who tends the ford near Niedflach. Gisilbehrt likes to talk but he never listens much, or so it seems to most. But sometimes, he shares an insight you wouldn't think he'd come up with. He sometimes sends word to Runa's farm if an interesting ship is passing by or interesting news comes to the ford. As a heron person, he flies off for a few weeks every summer to meet up with old friends in the north, and during that time, some of Ric's boys handle the ford.
  • Farmer Marculf, human apple orchard keeper, his dryad wife Theolinde, and his dryad daughter Kirsa, in Niedflach. Marculf truly loves Theolinde, and she him, but he also keeps her hidden in the apple orchard, and he is terrified of their daughter Kirsa being scrutinized too closely. He keeps them both sequestered. Both Theolinde and Kirsa have gone to Runa for help at times, and Kirsa loves to bring apples to feed the sheep and donkey.
  • Miller Siclebert, his wife Magneberga, and their twin babies, humans, in Niedflach. Siclebert and Magneberga want children very badly, but times have been hard of late. When Magneberga got pregnant, she realized they could not afford to keep the child. She went to Runa for an abortion. The couple was so heartbroken, Runa made a prophecy that they would one day have twins when things got better. Last spring, Magneberga had twins.
  • Pfaura, vaettir with heavy burn scars who works at the mill, in Niedflach. She does not talk about the scars.
  • Ministerialis Leuthold, vaettir, former serf, now runs Karmburg, a nearby town. He is a petty bully that no one likes. His main role is to make sure taxes are collected.
  • Köne, a chymosian (doctor who uses the theory of humors) and a human who is the nearest thing to a doctor. He hates Runa.
  • Witta, Köne's wife, also human, goes to Runa all the time, bringing women Köne has failed to help.
  • Swidger, a one-handed goblin who used to be a sailor. He now works odd jobs and has helped out on Runa's farm, fixing things. Swidger is a very helpful, very quiet, and has a reputation as a curmudgeon, but he's smart when it comes to fixing things.
  • Franzek and his wife Libeste, innkeepers, human. Libeste often sends people to Runa and her family when women come to the inn and are clearly in need. Libeste doesn't know Runa is a voelva, but she has expressed a fear of prophecy, something she gained as a child when a different kind of seer prophesied the death of her grandfather. Franzek is a nice enough guy, but he barely pays attention to anything but running the inn.
  • Their daughter, Ysentrud, who dreams of being an artist patroned by a Talunese noble. Ysentrud has often asked Runa to help her find a Talunese patron; though Runa knows an Emmoian merchant who might patron an artist, she does not know a Talunese one.
  • Their son, Girnot, who should be learning to run the inn but spends his time hunting and romancing Kirsa. Girnot is sometimes sent to Runa's farm to bring a basket of goods from his mother to trade for wool and fish.
  • Dorothea, an old woman empath who lost her husband and children to a fire. She lives in the inn and is taken care of by everyone. She likes to sit for tea with the locals, but always ends up talking about feeling her family die in the fire.
  • Another townswoman, Bräunle, works as a washerwoman for Leuthold. She is secretly of the faith of the Long Path. Bräunle has not shared her secret with Runa, but Runa recognized some signs of it because of her friendship with the flussjungfrau Henecota.

Clients
  • Burgrave Dietz, a human lord-mayor in Starkeström who trades with Runa via his servant Zeisolf, a hedgehog man. Zeisolf often has to travel for his master, and he is terrified of sea voyages. One time, he had to go on a particularly long one, all the way to Mahad, and Runa prophesied a safe voyage for him.
  • Noto, a dvergar merchant in Füßzuerst who specializes in magical objects. He's a skilled appraiser; she trusts his judgment better than most.
  • Abondancia, a woman in Cornuto who claims to be a specularo but looks human. She is a factor, a middlewoman for the local guilds, and she always seems to know more than she should. Her home is decorated with beautiful and cryptic designs.
  • Rambaldo, a nobleman and skilled fencer (said to be one of the best in the world), brannish. He would send his human wife Taudisca to do the trading, but once Runa found out he was beating his wife, she hexed Rambaldo and stopped dealing with him. The hex has yet to play out, as it prophesies that one day someone who wields a more powerful weapon will slay him.
  • Clario, an agent of the Spicer Guild in Piegarsi. He is a catfish man, but he has charms that let him walk on land. He rips people off regularly and Runa hates working with him, but she hasn't much choice sometimes. She hexed him into illness so that he was so sick he could not work, and now she deals with his servants who are more fair.
  • Bossaerd, a human tulip merchant in Nabijkode who is known as a patron of the arts and the university. He is human. He is mostly fair with Runa.
Ex-Lovers
  • Immed, deer folk soldier, ex-lover, married now to Hizecha, a deer woman, in Nordfestburg.
  • Matz, also a servant of Dietz in Starkeström, who is a former lover and still friendly acquaintance of Runa; best friend to Zeisolf.
  • Gaudente, a fairy woman who played beautiful music in Piegarsi. Gaudente works for the local lord; she was once a lover of Runa.

Other
  • Emperor Libentius of Heligwald, ruler of the country Runa is from, she's never met him, but he's very conservative even for her era
