Religions for the
infernal Divines are generally tied to state power and focused on the glorification and support of the Divine, rather than the Divine's service to the people. Some mask this, however. All of them have a front-facing format that disguises their true intentions and powers. Below, major religions are listed by the esoteric energy wielded primarily by the
inmortals at the heart of them.
Arnum:
Most well known faith is the Bellican Church, a small feudal church in league with the kingdom of
Bellican. Their primary philosophy is that pain is a sign of strengthening of the individual, and that suffering is a sign of holiness. Suffering for God is the path to salvation. This is used to justify the misery of the serfs and peasants, mostly, and the cruel treatment at the hands of the lords.
Also known is the
Jotuk faith, a small, strange variation in which the people believe the
abominations they create are the adjudicators of justice in their culture.
Baleblood:
Most well known faith is
TheBaleful's faith. The priesthood is extremely powerful amongst the massive, intricate families that rule the Horde. They teach the masses that they are naturally imbued with unspeakable rage, which is a blessing for them, a weapon to be wielded. In truth, the use of
baleblood is part of their culture because it inflicts the uncontrolled rage upon them. It turns the masses into warriors used to conquer and engage in brutal warfare. Their philosophy is that of a warrior culture that praises the leaders as great fighters.
Black Nommos:
Most well known faith is the Baradinite Church, a major part of the complex political and cultural aspects of the empire of
Baradin. Their primary message is that truth is rooted in the individual's perceptions. They teach a form of extreme relativism that suggests that what an individual perceives as right is right. However, as it plays out, the church and the imperial state determine the truth more often than not. Truth is what they enforce.
Another notable faith that wields
Bedrog is the people in the
Redleaf Forests of
Rullea in
Taggarus. They have a form of shamanism that draws not from ancestral memory but false memories created by the shamans, but which purports to be true ancestral connections. They use black nommos and commune with
echoes in order to create a set of fake truths that control the people of their tribes.
Blasphemy:
Most well known faith is the Harkanian Church, which purports to follow the One True God. They denounce all other Divines, claiming they are false idols, and that their Divine is above all. The church of
Harkanheim preaches that the path to salvation is through devotion above all to the church and the king, and that no oath or promise matters except those to the One True God. Therefore, no promise or oath matters save those made in the church, and therefore, they regularly break deals for their own gain.
Brown Aether:
Most well known is the church of
Lyfane. Focused on the greatness of progress of society through technology, they preach mortality's supremacy over nature. They talk of mortality's right to control and own the world, and that the way to do that is through mass industry. Anything that impedes industrial progress is violence against the rights of mortality. Their God is a machine.
Cacophony:
Most well known is the church in the
Shrikewood. As the primary culture there is based on hunting, they focus on what is and isn't the correct way to hunt. This expands to their broader views - essentially, it is a religion that promotes opportunism in all things. They promote individualism to the point of a lack of community, of self-sufficiency to the point of taking from others when necessary. Strike when the enemy is weak, strike when victory is assured. Be merciless in pursuit of survival, relying on no one.
Corrogatio:
Most well known is the church of
Furich Amol. The church is a powerful weapon of the state, which promotes the Emperor as a living god. He is considered an avatar of
Victoris, who guides them in conquest and empire. They believe they have the right to the land, people, and resources of the entire world, and anyone who opposes them is to be subjugated, exploited, or killed. Manifest Destiny is their doctrine.
Drenante:
Most well known is the church of
Lann Kurat, a major capitalist country. Their theirs is a prosperity doctrine - give money to the rich preachers to please God. Your wealth or lack thereof is a reflection of God's pleasure or lack thereof with you. The rich are God's favored and justified in anything that makes them rich. Hard work pleases God, and therefore, you should work hard for your bosses.
Eldritch Energy:
Most well known is the
Redemption Church, which has missionaries and churches worldwide. The heart of their power is in
Inall, but their
redeemers preach on every corner, in every city, in small towns, in backwoods, everywhere. They preach that the end of the world is coming, and that with it comes salvation and redemption for mortality. They preach that one must emanantize the eschaton so as to bring closer true salvation.
Feirua:
Most well known is the faith in
Stolzen. Theirs is the
Doctrine of the Pure, which purports that there are some mortals who are genetically superior to others. These mortals, who belong to "Pure Races", are destined to lead and rule the world, and the Impure are out to destroy them. Thus, they are justified in controlling, exploiting, and exterminating the lesser, Impure Races.
Fusei:
Most well known is the religion of the ruling class of
Tenzanai. Theirs is a faith that says that one must look for the advantage in all situations, and if there is none, create it. Take advantage of the disadvantaged, for their are in disfavor to the Gods and spirits. Their souls are incomplete, and less they must serve the powerful in order to fix it. What is justice but being favored in the eyes of the Gods?
Gossamer Light:
Most well know is the religion of
Srisia. The Srisian Church is ruled by
the Prophetess of the Spider, who is said to be all-knowing. If she knows all, and she represents the will of
Ettuttu, "the Spider", then anything allowed by them must be good in their eyes. Thus, whatever one does is permissible if one is not punished for it somehow. Individual liberty matters above all.
Hollow Energy:
Most well known is the church in
Mal'sk. They tell the people that the rulers of Mal'sk are descended of the original king, their God, known as
the Skinless King, who gave up his mortal form for their salvation. They are told to emulate him - to let their bodies suffer in order that their souls are sanctified. If they stray from their path, they will be taken by the horrible
Hollow Jack, himself a dangerous and powerful Divine being. They justify the feudal economy and monarchy through their faith.
Ibbissu:
Most well known is the religion of
Gest. A disorganized religion but one deeply enmeshed in the culture, they believe that the world began in chaos, and that order is unnatural. They believe that spiritual wholeness is gained through chaos, through disorder, through entropy. What others see as functional is seen by the
tantum of Gest as an affront to the way things should be. It is not simply a lack of structure, it is not simply a lack of order or law, it is a lack of boundaries, a lack of safety, a lack of peace. It is invasion, violation, and rot that they honor. Their doctrine is nihilism. None may be commanded. Nothing is true, and violence, pain, and terror are thus permissible. The powerful who control the peoples of Gest use this chaos they sew to manipulate, control, and exploit them.
The island of
Pandemonium also notably embraces
ibbissu and the belief that chaos, invasive, violent chaos, is the supreme state of things, but as the energy is so potent there, reality is weakened there. Thus, their doctrine is more potent, though the place is more obscure.
Imperium:
Most well known is the imperial church in
Urayme. The empire thrives on slavery, and the church backs their belief of the rightness of enslavement. They believe that their use of
schwerstrum is a sign of their supremacy, that their God,
Catena Factorem, taught them to craft it into the chains they use to control the slaves they take. The rulers of the empire, called
augusti, rule by Divine fiat, and that subservience to their will is an act of wisdom. Those ensalved deserve it for not being God's chosen.
Infernum:
The Divine associated with the energy of
infernum is
Diaboli, who is used as the enemy of God in most infernal faiths. He is depicted as the ruler of
the Hells, the one who inflicts perdition upon sinners and those without the grace of God. He is kept there by great angels who imprisoned him, and he is responsible for the perdition of the sinners.
Misfortune:
Most well known is the church of
Annec Hoth. This small country is a capitalist country wracked by natural disasters, and the religion there tells people that these disasters are God's punishment for their sins. The church claims that one man's misfortune is another's opportunity, however, and that the rich and powerful who profit off the suffering of others are enlightened, clever, and to be emulated. Those who suffer suffer because they are sinners or that they allowed others to sin without punishment.
Mollesse:
Most well known is the faith of
Tamarnthek. This country connected to the massive lands of the Horde is home to
ogres, whose faith says that self-harm is holy. They believe that showing emotion is a sign of weakness (though anger and frustration seem to be okay). They promote extreme pessimism, that the world is unsaveable and that there is no point to fighting to better it. Instead, one should carve out what they can in the world os misery and suffering that exists. They believe that despair is holy, and suicide is holier, for it is the most realistic response to a hopeless world.
Msawhat:
Most well known is the church of
Kael'Ras. The empire of Kael'Ras is almost entirely
undead, but the church has living agents who spread the faith around the world to promote the idea that they have achieve a utopia where no one dies. They promote the idea that corruption - social, spiritual, political, economic, all of it - is not corruption but the right way of things. People should be able to buy what they want, people should be able to influence others without recrimination. Venality is not venality, but virtue. They believe in a libertarian view of the world, where individualism reigns over public interest. And that the reward for this is inmortality. That inmortality is undeath, which is possible when the soul is violated by venality, though they do not promote it this way.
Peccatum:
Most well known is the faith of
Jhuin. The philosophy of this church is hedonism, the commodification of, glorification of, the power of pleasure - but pleasure at the expense of all else, especially of others. It is the belief that your pleasure outweighs the rights of others, and therefore, you can buy and sell people, use them, exploit them for your own benefit. Jhuin is a capitalist country where everything is for sale and nothing has value, and the church is a vector of vanity and cruelty.
Pravum:
The primary followers of the
Stillborn God are members of the
Stillborn Cult. They exist all over the world in small pockets, usually collectives of serial killers, pedophiles, rapists, the worst of society who band together to get away with it. Many of them are very, very powerful and rich members of society. The only place the cult is truly concentrated in deep underwater, near where the Stillborn God waits, and where its power is such that the waters around it are warped, in
Uth Kaan. There, the cult is completely open about their evil, but elsewhere, they are either predators seeking victims on the streets or extremely powerful (mostly) men engaging in violent predation of children.
Quaestus:
The most well known is the faith in
Endruin. Known for their ritual blood sacrifices, which are taken very seriously and honored as the sacredest act a follower of
Mal'och can undertake, the faith is centered upon massive temples with rivers of blood flowing through them. This grotesquerie is promoted as a wonder of the world; they openly proclaim to be humane in their taking of blood. Indeed, they have hospital facilities in every temple, and death is not a necessary part of the sacrifice. The philosophy of giving blood is claimed to be to share with others, but most of the usable blood is drunk, bathed in, or used by
Siphoners and
contessas. The promotion of the idea of giving until one suffers is projected onto the work ethic of the people of Endruin as well, which is a powerful ecclesiastical capitalist empire. Slavery and wage labor are commonly held up as virtues.
Razdavit':
The church of
Dostizheniye is equally known around the world as either the
Vesturian Church or the
Deserian Church. Both recognize the Vesturian
Glavnyy Yepiskop (Master Bishop) as the mortal head of their church, but the Deserian Church claims that they are the original and that their imperial family is descended of Dostizheniye, whereas the Vesturian imperial family that, while not the original, they are the superior church, and their imperial family is the true descendant of Dostizheniye. Regardless, their philosophies are much the same: individual achievement is more important than anything else. Might makes right. Gain power, influence, wealth, everything no matter the costs.
Slitna:
The most well known is the faith of the
trolls around the world. There are some variations depending on the trollish community, but the main gist of their faith(s) is that life is hard, therefore they must be harder. One must become unbreakable, and one must destroy any and all obstacles before them, violently if necessary. The act of destroying something intentionally made is a sacred sacrifice, an act of dominance, and a sign of one's becoming one with God. Further, God is a warrior, and one must be a warrior in his image.
Sterisi:
The most well known are the many faiths of the western wastelands of
Ansulym, where they believe the best way to survive is vicious individualism. They believe that self-denial is a form of sacrifice to God, but they also believe that it is right and good to take the food and water from others to survive. That to cause famine or drought if it means you live in luxury is well and good. Self-denial, then, is a form of discipline that is practiced by some, but in fact they mostly practice gluttony.
Stravomenos:
The most well known is the church of
Chaleur in the
Galdish Westlands. God provides knowledge to the church, which disseminates it to the people as needed. Knowledge is power, and they are too mean and ignorant to be trusted with power. Only those who are knowledgeable know how to wield power. Only those who have power deserve knowledge.
Thorn Energy:
The most well known is the
Aeldian Church. In
Mwyr Aeld, the feudal ruling class performs ritual hunts of slaves, claiming to be descended of the original hunters of their people. As such, their philosophy is based on hunting - they believe that they have the right to take what they want. They believe that they are the best of the best, and any threat to their supremacy must be hunted and killed. They believe that they may take even if others suffer for it. The lower classes are taught that by virtue of blood their betters rule, and that to serve a great lord means to find salvation one day by the hand of their Goddess.
Uafas:
The most well known is the faith of
Tromlui. The
Unseelie Court and the
goblins believe that to be feared is to be powerful. They believe that fear is the means to control others, and that to show fear is to show weakness. To experience it, however, is holy. They prey upon the fears of the populace and tell them that salvation lies in protection from those who do not show fear. They teach that to use the fear of others to remain strong is the best way to survive in the world.
Vile Energy:
The most well known are
Fennvell and
Vendale. In Fennvell, the church preaches that disease is a punishment from God, and that to try to resist a disease is an affront to God. Trust in God to protect you from disease. To die of disease is to die deserving suffering. In Vendale, the church preaches that the plants and fungi of the world are made for the pleasures of mortals, and that anyone who succumbs to them is weak. Thus, the nobles of Vendale take poisons to get high and sell them to make massive profits, and anyone who dies of them deserved it.
Void:
The most well known is in the
Voidbarrens. They preach that technology is the supreme form of life. They preach technology for the sake of technology and to give up all to the Void.
