Description Vile appear to be supernaturally beautiful, human-like women with long, blonde hair. Their skin tone and their eye color varies greatly. They can shapechange (see below). They often wear long, flowing white robes or nothing at all.
Procreation Because they are often jealous of other fey, vile usually trade their unNamed babies for other feys' unNamed babies. They reproduce sexually with other fey and vaettir.
Esoterica Vile are beings of envy resonance, thorn energy, poioumenon, and uafas. Like all faeries, they are users of The Tradition, a form of poioumenonic lore empowered by dream energies. They also use other emotional resonances, other infernal energies, arnum, msawhat, cacophony, rending, currents aether, winds aether, greenlight aether, earthpower aether, seasonal aether, Damaskian powers, yahas, kor, the gates, mystery, b'qar, lymph, tears, blood, Raesian energy, viscera, spirits, and symbolism.
The Tradition

Vile have the following basic fey powers:

  • Vile can vanish and become insubstantial by speaking their True Name into a mirror.
  • A circle of salt will protect a vila from supernatural powers for as long as it goes undisturbed.
  • Any vila being may summon a cheval mallet or fey deer by whistling three special notes.

Every vile can walk in the clouds and survive underwater in fresh water. They have an affinity for trees. They can build on clouds as well. And they can see in low-light.

Many vila powers are based on their emotions. An angry vila can command a raging whirlwind by using ancient swear words. Their touch can heal minor wounds if they are calm of heart. They can instill controlling toxins with their touch if they are feeling spiteful. Their touch is soothing.

Vile make arrows with special toxins that confuse men's hearts.

If a man calls out their name (or Name), the man will find his muscles made stiff and hard to move. He will catch ill and die within a year.

Vile take part in an special circle dance that instills lust in everyone who is attracted to them. Those who engage with the dance because of lust are killed and devoured. This dance is special to them and cannot be interfered with or interrupted without their permission. Those who do are subjected to horrible revenge. If their sweat falls in a circle while they dance, a fairy ring of mushrooms will grow, bringing bad luck to any who step into it.

On rare occasions, a vila will decide she likes the man they have lured into their dance. She will mark him, making her his blood sister, and send him on a quest. Women or non-binary folk drawn into the circle are sometimes spared and given a boon. Some seek them out for the chance to be beautiful or to protect a long-distance lover.

The voice of a vila has special powers as well: it can entrance someone if spoken with a lusty whisper and they can mimic the noise of pipes and drums as they walk through clouds.

Other powers are based on ancient stories of them. Vile can change their natural shape by washing with mink fat (usually a swan, falcon, horse, or wolf). They can control faeriesteeds or fey deer by biting their necks. They memorize six false prophecies as children that they can adapt to any mortal.

Glamour Vile can glamour themselves using certain ancient rhymes. If a vila is glamoured, their beauty will cause intense envy in those who see them.
Weaknesses

If they do not speak their True Name backwards into that same mirror in half a minute, vile lose their True Names. They have a fortnight to recover it or they become targets of the Wild Hunt, corrupted into another kind of fey, or turn into a hag or boggin. Iron or steel will bind a vila into powerlessness. An iron horseshoe nailed over a door will bar a vila from entering a house. Most vile detest tobacco smoke, and it can be used to stave them off. This is just a preference, however, and not a weakness.

Dumaqu harms them. The sincere, honest love of a man of any nation can transform them. Some seek this out.

National Culture

Vile live in small communities of women (any variation from this gender means banishment). These communities are jealous, back-stabbing, and cruel, with deep, intricate sets of rules to live by. These rules make it easier for vile leaders to punish and control others. Each community is led by a circle of nine elders, called the carodejnice. This circle is made up of the most powerful and ruthless of the vile. Whether they live in the forests, the rivers, the caves, or the clouds, they have the same social structure. The carodejnice select a leader who represents them in the national gathering which happens every 100 years, called a zavet. The zavet is run by the most powerful of the vile, their Manifest, Oksana Rusalka, who is their Queen.

The Queen rules the country, forest, river, and cloud, from her cloud castle made of gleaming, multicolored stones. Young maidens from every community are sent there to serve her. Those she hates, she gifts to carodejnices seeking servants. Those she likes, she keeps as bed companions and servants. Each carodejnice pays her tribute, and in turn, she and her trnstrazara (thorn guards) police the realm and protect its borders.

Every community has a hidden spot where they perform their circle dance. This dance sends out a quiet call to all who are attracted to them; those who answer it are entranced by the dance and must resist joining it or being eaten. They do this dance every full and new moon for their chosen moon (usually the White Moon). Some men they use as weapons against their enemies; some men they use as food; some men they use as slaves; some men they use as breeding studs; some men they use as decoration.

Children are usually traded out for fey children of other nations, if those children can be taken before they are Named. They are raised by servants and slaves until they are old enough to be sent off to serve the Queen or a carodejnice. Those that survive this return to their communities hardened and ready to engage in the dangerous politics of the vila nation. By the age of 17, they are considered adults. Though vile lure in men for breeding, food, or servitude, they often find themselves in relationships with each other, often sexual or romantic. These do not last long and monogamy is non-existent.

Those who visit a vila community on a normal day, without the dance, without any antagonisms, usually find them to be very open, inviting, and friendly, but even the smallest slight will make them vengeful and violent. They are eager fighters. Servants who disobey them are also treated very harshly.

Some who live near vila communities appease them with tributes of flowers, food, and drinks.

Unseelie Culture In the Unseelie Court, vile are an honored nation. Their national culture is allowed to exist alongside Unseelie Court culture, mostly, but tribute must be paid to the Unseelie Queen. The Vila Queen is considered her vassal, and part of the tribute she collects goes to the Unseelie Court. Vile are valued by the ruling class as allies and spouses, political allies (for as long as they can be), and mystics. They are major players in the slave trade. They are constantly politcally maneuvering for more power.
Other Courts Vile are welcomed and feared in the Winter and Unkindly Courts, though in both, they find themselves at odds with members of the ruling class at times. In the Summer Courts, they are given a chance to prove their good intentions; those who fail are banished or made to convert to another nation. In the Seelie Court, they are welcomed until they prove themselves untrustworthy. They face death, banishment, or conversion if they fail. In the Kindly Court, conversion is required.
Mortal Interactions Vile lure in mortals to kill, eat, rape, or enslave them.
