Lunar Conditions

The moons are decidedly different from the surface of the world. Below are some of the conditions that may affect our heroes.

Size

Each moon is a different size:
  • Grey Moon: the Grey Moon is about the size of Earth's moon, with a circumference of 6,786 miles.
  • Green Moon: the Green Moon is slightly smaller than the Grey, with a circumference of 5,089 miles.
  • White Moon: the White Moon is much smaller than the Grey,w ith a circumference of 3,958 miles.

Distance

Each moon is a different distance from Shem:
  • Grey Moon: 244,316 miles from the center of Shem with an orbital circumference of 767,541.35 miles and orbital speed of 1,142.17 mph.
  • Green Moon: 252,442 miles from the center of Shem with an orbital circumference of 793,069.93 miles and orbital speed of 1,376.86 mph.
  • White Moon: 275,173 miles from the center of Shem with an orbital circumference of 864,481.48 miles and orbital speed of 1,200.67 mph.
Shem is 91.1 million miles from Sol Angelos. Shem’s circumference is 25,504 miles at the equator.

Because the orbits are not synchronized, sometimes the moons are further apart from one another than at other times.

Atmosphere

The atmospheres of the three moons require different protections for those used to breathing on Shem:
  • Grey Moon: 5% density of Shem, almost nonexistent, with a higher percentage of noble gases present, as well as gases that would not be gases on Shem. A breather and filter are required.
  • Green Moon: 110% density of Shem, thicker and more humid, with more carbon dioxide and argon than on Shem. A filter is required, but not a breather.
  • White Moon: 0% density of Shem, nonexistent, no barrier between the White Moon and outer space. A breather is required, but not a filter.
For both breathers and filters, see Necessities.

Gravity

Each moon’s gravity is different and requires different alterations to be usable by beings from Shem.
  • Grey Moon: 15% of Shem’s gravity. Weight is affected, muscle building is harder, jumping, running, and flight are easier. To walk normally, gravboots of power 21 are required. To build muscle normally, exercise must increase 25% or must be done in a special weighted outfit called a weightsuit.
  • Green Moon: 90% of Shem’s gravity. Weight is minimally affected, muscle building is only barely more difficult, and jumping, running, and flight are the same, due to thicker atmosphere but lighter gravity. Gravboots must be reduced to power 2 to replicate Shem gravity, if wanted.
  • White Moon: 5% of Shem’s gravity. Weight is affected, muscle building is much harder, jumping, running, and flight are much easier. To walk normally, gravboots of power 24 are required. To build muscle normally, exercise must increase 60% or must be done in a special weighted outfit called a weightsuit.
There are five different common kinds of gravboots:
  • Greensoles: using elemental gravity magic, these are made by Grey Moon locals and have adjustable gravity. They are usable in any natural environment.
  • Standard issue (Grey Moon, Green Moon, White Moon): made by colonial powers, these are provided by the imperial military but are commonly available. Mass assembled, cheap, and usable in any environment, they have one setting, and a different pair must be bought for each moon.
  • Automatic boots: made by workers seeking a better model than the standard issue, automatic boots are adjustable, responding to the people around you as well as the environment. Made by benefactators, they have to be custom made, and therefore, they are harder to get.
  • Fairsoles: feymade boots that react to the stories of where they are, adjusting automatically, but asking a price of their wearers.
  • Betweeners: made on the White Moon, these allow the wearer to adjust gravity as well as plane of reality. Very expensive, but very powerful.
See Necessities for more information on gravboots.

Radiation

Radiation from the sun is stronger in lighter atmospheres, requiring special protections. An intensification of radiation is known as a “radiation event”, with radiation coming from radiation belts near planets, cosmic rays, solar winds, various cosmic bodies, galactic superwinds, and more.

To determine the source of radiation, roll a d100:
Source Power Roll
Distant supernova 5 to 9 1-4
Pulsar stream 11 to 13 5-8
Magnetar stream 9 to 13 9-12
Quasar stream 7 to 13 13-16
Solar winds 12 to 16 17-31
Planetary radiation belt 15 to 18 32-50
Solar flare 14 to 18 51-60
Cosmic rays 16 to 22 61-64
Cosmic dust storm 13 to 25 65-68
Natural radioactive materials 5 to 25 69-75
Mortalmade source 1 to 30 76-90
Galactic superwind 18 to 30 91-94
Gamma ray burst 24 to 30 95-100
Each moon has its own radiation conditions:
  • Grey Moon: with a lighter atmosphere, radiation exposure increases 70% during an event, requiring shielding for non-natives at a power of 18. Power of radiation is always at an 8.
  • Green Moon: its thicker atmosphere and magic means there is no need for radiation shielding while there.
  • White Moon: with no atmosphere, radiation exposure is severe (increase of 100%) during an event, requiring shielding for non-natives at a power of 25. Power of radiation varies between 10 and 15.
Radiation damage is determined by failure level:
Roll Result Immediate Symptoms Penalty Latent Period Illness Strength Recovery Death
Tie Mild poisoning Nausea and loss of appetite None None None 1 1 hour, no treatment necessary None
Normal failure Moderate poisoning Nausea, vomiting, fever, headache -1 in combat, -3 out 1 month Blood poisoning, nerve damage, fatigue 8 6 months with treatment Two months without treatment
Special failure Major poisoning Gastrointestinal distress, fever, headache, nerve damage -3 in combat, -6 out None Blood poisoning, nerve damage, fatigue, hair loss, purpurra, hemorrhaging 14 2 years with treatment 6 weeks without treatment
Exceptional failure Severe poisoning High fever, gastrointestinal distress, dizziness, nerve damage -6 in combat, -9 out None Severe blood poisoning, disorientation, electrolyte disturbance, purpurra, low blood pressure 20 5 years with treatment 4 weeks without treatment
Critical failure Fatal poisoning All of the above plus seizures and unconsciousness -9 in combat, -12 out, unconsciousness None Unconsciousness and death 26 None without supernatural intervention Within 48 hours
If afflicted, one must roll against the STR vs. the strength rating of the poisoning during recovery, with bonuses from treatment.

See Necessities for radiation shielding information.

Light

Due to varying atmospheric conditions, special candles are needed if there is a need for light, and special eyewear is needed for bright conditions due to the reflective surfaces on some moons. Specifically, the Grey and White Moons are very reflective during the day, and with low or no air, they need magical candles to provide lighting. See Necessities for information on candles.

Magnetic Field

For the White and Grey Moons, lunar magnetic fields are not dipolar, because the moons do not have sufficient size or atmosphere to maintain it. Instead, the magnetic fields fluctuate in strength depending on proximity to different sources of magnetic field activity, usually near major impact craters or various anomalies. As such, compasses on these moons are useless unless one is specifically trying to find a magnetic field rather than finding a direction. Instead, locals use either the stars or local landmarks, and visitors use magical directional devices.

On the Green Moon, compasses function normally, as the moon’s atmosphere is thick enough to maintain a magnetic field despite its smaller size.

Temperature

Temperatures can vary drastically on the moons. Special protections may be required.
  • Grey Moon: Temperatures during night get down to -300 and during the day up to 200 degrees.
  • Green Moon: Temperatures range from -100 at night to 150 degrees during the day.
  • White Moon: Temperatures range from -400 at night to 300 during the day.
Protections involve using special regulators. See Necessities for more information.

Weather

There is no weather on the White Moon, but there is light weather phenomenon on the Grey Moon and a lot of conditions on the Green Moon.
  • Grey Moon: the light atmosphere of the Grey Moon means only very rare weather phenomena occur here. Very light mists, soft breezes, vague hazes, small duststorms and dustdevils, deep freezes, intense heat waves, and very rare and random discharges of lightning occur.
  • Green Moon: the thick atmosphere of the Green Moon creates intense weather patterns. The climate varies from tropical to arctic, but the temperate zones are very small - most of the world is tropical or subtropical. The tropical and subtropical zones have a wet and dry season. The wet season sees massive monsoons; the dry season sees droughts. Other extremes include torrential rains, heavy fogs, sunshowers, thunderstorms, squalls, hail storms, waterwhirls (on lakes), and tornadoes in the wet season; and duststorms, heat waves, heat lightning, firewhirls, dustdevils, heavy haze, and windstorms during the dry season. In the polar regions, blizzards, heavy snows, and thundersnows are common.
