Dragons gain new powers as they accumulate more energies. At each stage of growth, they gain a new ability, usually culminating with the twelfth ability when they accumulate . The usual progression of powers is as follows:

• Level 1: Sable smoke breath weapon
• Level 2: Immunity to poison
• Level 3: Immunity to control
• Level 4: Immunity to emotional assault
• Level 5: Scale grants bearer malicious presence
• Level 6: Hellscape barrier
• Level 7: Warp Name, seven times per year
• Level 8: Instill agony (group of ten)
• Level 9: Sense weakness
• Level 10: Soul control
• Level 11: Summon demons
• Level 12: Killing word

All dragons accumulate energies by absorbing them naturally from the area around them. As such, they must carefully cultivate their lairs to provide the right kinds of energies, hence they hoard appropriate objects.

Other common powers include immunity to justice, create serial killer, unleash pandemic, instill obsession, emotion drain, fatal nightmare, falsify soul, exploit group, and sense betrayal.

Sable dragons lay their eggs in the darkness in the shadows of dread mountains, where they abandon their eggs to be stolen by whomsoever wishes to steal them. Only about one in ten survive to maturity. Most end up becoming other kinds of dragons. Sable dragons only appear about one in 100,000 dragons.

Sable dragons are solitary beings. They rule over other dragons of the family of Sable Night, and they are feared by all. They demand tribute from all within their territories.
