Fey Healers
Those who use fey magic to heal.
Molfar
Type: Doctor
Molfars are plague doctors of fey magic who use special fey waters to see things others cannot within a person.
The waters of Faerie have magic in them. They soak it up from all over, from dreams, from stories, from legends, from the spells cast around them. These waters turn anyone who bathes in them fey if they are not already, making them have a hint of the otherworldly. They infuse people with the narrative energies of the Spirit Realm.
Molfars use this water to enhance their insights. They bathe in it regularly, causing their minds and bodies to alter, seeing strange visions, and they use it directly on their eyes, tongues, noses, hands, and ears to heighten their senses. The result of this is that they are seen as alien, strange, and unusual - and they often act it. Many times, they are unrecognized by the people who have known them longest for a full day after a bath in fairywaters.
They also study medicine, such as it is understood in the 1300s, and practice it mundanely as well as magically. They wear the plague doctor masks and cloaks, and they use every traditional cure they can. Their goal, their purpose, is to fight the plagues that are ravaging the region. They willingly give up their normalcy and recognizability for the magic to fight it:
- Steaming fumigation: fumigating a residence where plague has hit with steam made from fey waters.
- Absorbing chicken: washing and plucking a chicken, rubbing it against a sick person, then strapping it down so it absorbs the illness.
- Snake poultice: chopping up a snake, mixing it with fey waters, and making a poultice to apply to buboes.
- Powdered equine horn: the horn of a horned horse, ground up and mixed with fey waters, is a panacea, though incredibly rare.
- Adjusting draught: a bit of fey water drunk in the right amount and at the right time could adjust the humors to speed healing and recovery.
- Repelling bath: a large dose of the fey waters designed to repel infernal magic.
- Crushed emerald solution: fey waters mixed with crushed emeralds would alleviate symptoms, but it costs a lot.
- Balanced poison: fey waters mixed with arsenic and mercury could kill the plague bacteria but also weakens the patient.
- Spiced waters: Four Thieves Vinegar made with fey waters weakens the plague but does not heal it.
- Theriac: a potion of 80 ingredients including fey waters, a thick treacly potion, could fully heal the plague, but it takes the most work.
- Fragrant bouquet: flowers grown with fey waters held beneath the nose while in areas of death and plague would keep it away.
- Bloodletting: using tools washed in fey waters to let blood of a plague victim would alleviate the pain.
- Root cream: a cream made from the roots of plants grown with fey waters would alleviate the trauma of the plague afterward.
Molfars are feared and respected, and they charge for their magic - if the patient can’t pay money, they can pay something more esoteric.

Pociakerdo
Type: Apothecary
A pociakerdo is someone who uses the fey magic of Names to make medicines and concoctions.
The magic of Names is the most potent magic on Shem. To wield it, one must study the Lore and the Tradition for centuries, find secret magicks few even know exist, and give up part of one’s body, mind, heart, and soul for the power.
Pociakerdi do not do that. They make a pact with someone who did that. They make a pact with the Queen’s Physician, Lemuant, who doles out the magic carefully and stingily. He takes from them in exchange a smaller piece of their body, mind, heart, and soul, as well as requiring of them 101 years of service as one of the Queen’s apothecaries. Queen Matuya then sends them to part of her queendom to work in the villages and towns, to a minor lord, or to a major court, depending on their skill.
The powders, ointments, medicines, and tablets made by a pociakdero all address fundamental issues. They address something wrong at the core of a person, but they also come with a cost. Some of the common things made include the following:
- Identifying powder: a powder that, when taken for three days and nights mixed with water or milk, allows someone else to see what malady afflicts you, mundane or magical, but to use it, one must give up a magical power.
- Ointment of blood curing: an ointment put on the thighs, neck, and chest that, after six days of use, makes the blood flow easier and repel illnesses from within, but to use it, one must give up a point of ESS.
- Oil of heart’s restoration: an oil that can be inhaled if burnt or soaked into the flesh of the chest which, if used for a fortnight, alleviates emotional damage completely, but to use it, one must give up a point of AWA or WIL.
- Soul medicine: a medicine that must be taken by the spoonful once per day for a year and a day in order to restore the metaphysical essence of a person, but to use it, one must give up a point of STR.
- Tablet of subconscious repair: a tablet that must be taken with a bit of juice every night for a full cycle of a moon in order to repair subconscious mental trauma or damage, but to use it, one must give up a point of PRS.
- Pill of nine sleeps: a pill that lets the one taking it get nine full nights’ sleeps in a row (once per night for nine days), but requires they give up one dream per night.
- Social balm: a balm that can repair a Relationship Motivation if used once per night for seven days, but it costs a Passion Motivation.
- Name’s salve: a potent salve that can repair all aspects of a person, once, perfectly, and all it costs is seven years of their life.
Pociakerdi are often sent on special tasks by the Queen’s Physician, even out of their own queendom.
