Elemental Plant Folk

Anthropomorphic plants with inherent elemental powers.

Bryonian

Moss people.
  • Lifespan : 100 years
  • Diet: Photosynthetic
  • Habitat: Moist places
  • Socioeconomic Status: Oppressed

Bryonians appear to be 7' tall figures with hulking, hunched bodies that are covered in shaggy moss on their backs, and the backs of their arms and legs. The other side has tiny roots hanging there to absorb nutrients.

Bryonians have the ability to submerge into earth, soil, or loam - not stone, metal, wood, or plastic - and appear to be non-sentient moss. They are cool to the touch and can heal other plant folk with a bit of their moss. They also have the power to latch onto anything wooden or stone with their tiny roots that hang off the underside of their arms, legs, and torsos. These roots can drain energy from anything they latch onto.

The bryonians of the colonies are mostly enslaved.

There are those who lived in remote areas who maintained their original culture, which was based around an ancient nature religion. Those in the cities have half-assimilated, though they tend to have a more pro-nature sentiment simply because the pollutants of the industrial world are severely bad for them.

In Ranu, many bryonians resemble fir clubmosses, haricap mosses, red bog-mosses, or sphagnum bog-mosses.

Dudum

Gourd people.
  • Lifespan : 300 years
  • Diet: Photosynthetic and vegetarian
  • Habitat: Temperate to tropical pastoral
  • Socioeconomic Status: Oppressed

Plant people with gourd shells. They stand about 2' to 3' tall. They have green or brown bodies and large gourds as shells that cover their backs. Their gourds can resemble any kind of natural gourd.

Dudums have the ability to hide in their gourds. They can also extend the protection of their gourd to others magically by expanding the gourd over them. They can only cover one other person, and then only if that person is no more than thrice their size. They can do this for 5 minutes a day.

A dudum who is mortally wounded may hide in their gourd and stop the risk of death. However, their full recovery will take longer than it might with other species.

Dudums can store water in their gourds and transform it into a medicinal drink, but this costs them their own nourishment.

Dudums live in small communities, mostly farming communities or small towns, and they have a culture of pastoral living and simple pleasures. Though not fey, many live in Gradina, the principality of the Pumpkin Prince, a powerful fey.

Ebikoola

Fern people.
  • Lifespan : 200 years
  • Diet: Photosynthetic and vegetarian
  • Habitat: Temperate to tropical
  • Socioeconomic Status: Oppressed

People with ferns growing out of their bulbous heads. They have green and black skin, leaf fronds on their arms and legs, and stand about 4' tall. They often resemble specific ferns, and ones common in Endruin include bracken, clubmoss, great horsetail, holly fern, least adder's-tongue, marsh fern, oak fern, quillwort, ribbon fern, royal fern, wall-rue, and water fern. Their feet look like roots.

Each ebikoola has different powers. Some common abilities include poisonous fronds, whip-like appendages, granting good fortune at certain times of year, invisible travel through marshes, sending guidance, and special protections from poison or other substances. Their root-like feet allow them to bond emotionally with other ebikoolas.

The ferns growing from their heads always move independently from the rest of them, often reflecting their moods.

Ebikoola live in small comunities in humid areas of the the empires where they engage in ancestor worship, root-bonding, and rites aided by powerful substances. Locals are integrated with the native nations. They are deeply oppressed in the empires and often end up working in harsh conditions. Many in Ranu resemble ostrich ferns, common horsetails, or marsh horsetails.

Fluer

Flower people.
  • Lifespan : 200 years
  • Diet: Water, sunlight, and soil
  • Habitat: Anywhere plants can grow
  • Socioeconomic Status: Oppressed

Flower people. Fluers appear to be anthropomorphic flowers. They can resemble any flowering plant. The smallest of them are about 2’ tall, while the largest stand at 9’ in height (flowering tree people), depending on the size of the plant they resemble. Some are more flower-like, appearing to be mobile flowers with faces amidst their petals and others appear to be humans with flower-like features, or somewhere in between.

Fluers have the ability to speak to and understand flowering plants. They always have a power based on their colors, and every fluer has special powers based on the flower they resemble. Consult the GM for these powers.

Fluers can attract specific insects with their aromas. Every individual has a different insect, native to where they are from, that they attract and can influence and communicate with.

Every fluer nation is based on the flower species they resemble, and there are many all over the world. There are many commonalities between them, however.

They create wondrous communities of buildings made of colorful plants, great wooden structures, and fountains and pools. Locals are integrated with the native nations.

Radixian

Root people.

  • Lifespan: 80-120 years
  • Diet: Nutrients and water
  • Habitat: Subsurface soil or some slight variations
  • Socioeconomic Status: Oppressed

Radixians vary in size from 6” to 12’ tall, depending on what kind of root they resemble. Most are on the smaller size. They are all anthropomorphic roots or root-parts, tubers or subsoil parts of plants, ranging from carrots and potatoes to thin fibrous roots and heavy taproots to climbing or floating roots in some cases (these latter might be rare radixians who live above ground).

Radixians can burrow under soil or earth with ease. They have kinesthetic and seismic senses while underground, and they can communicate with any radixian or plant within 50 miles who is underground or has their roots or parts underground. They can absorb water that touches them and draw nutrients out of soil and dirt with a touch as well.

Most are extremely tough.

If enough radixians live in an area, they can purify and enrich the soil, give protections to plants from disease or fire, and generally make them stronger.

Radixians live in small cluster communities. They live completely communally and equally, sharing everything and having few secrets, sometimes even merging into communal organisms. They are very powerful magically when this happens. Their culture focuses on seeking deep knowledge beneath the ground, connecting with others, and building networks of sharing and protection of the earth and plants. They honor the plants around them.

In imperial society, they are often enslaved and used for their powers in agriculture. Many resemble carrots in Ranu.

Sushenny

Tiny pinecone people.

  • Lifespan : 500 years
  • Diet: Snow and ice
  • Habitat: Subarctic to arctic forests
  • Socioeconomic Status: Oppressed

Sushennies are 1' tall pinecone people. They have twig arms and legs, pine needle hair, and pinecone bodies, with tiny heads that pop out the base (top) of the pinecone. Their little wooden heads have glowing orange eyes.

Sushennies have the ability to absorb cold air and release it to make it even colder. They can fling sap in greater quantities than their bodies should be able to hold, using it to entrap targets. They can hide their limbs and heads in their bodies and hide as pinecones, adding +6 to their toughness when they do this. A sushenny can speak to conifers of any kind.

Sushennies live in the northern boreal forests and taiga. Their original culture is a nomadic one, wandering the taiga in small communities, following the snow and ice, tending the forests, protecting the trees and animals. They worship ancient trees. In the empires, they are deeply oppressed.

Trevaluge

Grass people.

  • Lifespan: 50-80 years
  • Diet: Meat, water, sunlight
  • Habitat: Grasslands
  • Socioeconomic Status:

Trevaluges are anthropomorphic grass, reed, or grain people. They can resemble any kind of grass, reed, or grain. Most are about 4' tall.

Trevaluges have the ability to hide themselves by standing still for a full minute. They are physically slender, usually, and they can blend into an area easily. They are able to speak to all grasses, grains, or reeds, and they always have sharp blades on their arms.

All trevaluges will also have magical powers specific to the kinds of grass, reed, or grain they resemble. Consult the GM.

Trevaluges are nomads on the grasslands and steppes, living in sprawling communities that wander amidst the plants they resemble, hiding and hunting. They are known for their distinct whistling that they communicate over long distances with, their affinity for centaurs, and their distrust of anyone else. They have a complex culture of nature worship, honoring and speaking to the winds, and wandering seeking water and prey.

In Ranu, they often resemble common reeds, great bulrushes, mountain rye, reed mace, rice cutgrasses, and sedges.

Vitian

Vine people.

  • Lifespan: 60-90 years
  • Diet: Water, nutrients, and sunlight
  • Habitat: Anywhere
  • Socioeconomic Status: Oppressed

Vitians appear to be 5’ tall people made of an entanglement of vines, shaping into a vaguely hominid form. They vary in appearance in that some are more bulky and neckless with thick, complicated limbs, others are whip-thin and have long necks and limbs, and some are in-between. Some are flowery, some are thorny, some are ropey, some are knotted, some are looped. Most are green and brown, but some are more colorful. Some rare ones are all black or all white, and these have unexpected powers.

Vitians have vines within them that can extend out thrice their body length. They use these to grab or climb or otherwise like extended limbs. They need to drive their extended vines into the earth at least once a day to draw in nutrients, to get at least an hour of sunlight, and to use these same vines for water absorption as well (though only for a few minutes).

If there are any vining plants within 30’, they can speak to them. If they take a cutting from a vining or climbing plant, they can incorporate it into their bodies and make part of them similar to the cutting (thus sometimes making themselves both thorny and flowery, ropey and loopy, etc.).

If they resemble specific viney or climbing plants, they may have other powers associated with those plants. White vitians can entangle souls; black vitians can entangle hearts.

Vitians live in places where vegetation is dense. They make themselves part of it, forming their communities within forests, wetlands, even gardens. They live communally, share as much as they can, and form powerful defense systems against dangers to their verdure. Their culture is very much about cultivating wondrous green sanctums. They are a little xenophobic because of the constant threats to their homes from imperials. In imperial society, they are often exploited or enslaved for their powers.

Ivy and grape vine people are common in Ranu, as well as milkwort.

Xyloskian

Plant people who need no sunlight.
  • Lifespan: 200 years
  • Diet: Darkness or moonlight
  • Habitat: Dark regions
  • Socioeconomic Status: Oppressed
Xyloskians appear to be 9' tall, pure white anthropomorphic bromeliads.

Xyloskians feed off shadow and not sunlight. They can get by on moonlight, but pitch darkness is best for them. Most of it is absorbed for sustenance, but some is used for magic. They can draw in darkness or moonlight and use it to become invisible (if there are shadows touching them), blind someone (via a spray of black nectar), or open dark passages (with their root-feet). Direct sunlight harms them.

Xyloskians live in secret communities in the darkest places. They often live underground or in the deepest thickest forests. Their communities are led by a council of secret masters who know more than the others, and the rest of the community works for them as seekers of arcane knowledge. They create strange art works and architectures, shaping the stone and roots and earth into unseen structures. Imperials are mostly unaware of them.
