Celestial Spirits

Beings based on legends, stories, folklore, or myth from Earth.

Alkonost

Alkonosts are bird-headed spirits who are all female-assigned. They are often complementary to sirins, another bird spirit. They have magic that brings happiness and good fortune, can foretell the future, and can inflict death in severe circumstances. They can see into the Nether Realm, which they call Rai. Their voices are beautiful, and they can make people forget or lose their desires with their songs. They dwell on the breach and lay eggs, which they store in the sea. While the eggs are gestating, there are no storms in the area, but their hatching brings inclement weather. Imperials try to make alkonosts work for the church due to their voices, but they dislike it. Alkonosts love apples and will dance and laugh all afternoon with someone who shares them. Afterward, all the fruits on the trees will have healing magic.

Anito

A wide variety of spirits living in the rain forests far to the south. They have been fighting colonial powers for millennia, and they cannot be enslaved. Any in imperial lands would be oppressed but not enslaved. Based on spirits and beings from the folklore and history of the Philippines. Click here for some ideas. Consult GM for more info.

Vesna

Vesnas (male: vesniks) are spirits of springtime and youth. In rural areas, they are central to many rituals that honor the coming of renewal. They live in large homes high in the mountains and have magic to alter the planting season. In the last month of winter, they take wooden carts into the valleys and sing. Only certain folk can hear their songs. If someone found their mountain homes, they would either learn their own futures or face a terrible end. Locals often carry clay figures of a lark on a pivot decorated with flowers and sing songs about the spring to honor the vesnas.
