Elemental Spirit Folk

Elemental spirit beings and others based on stories and legends.

Apiperi

Volcanic fey.
  • Lifespan: 150 years
  • Diet: Fish-heavy fey fare
  • Habitat: Volcanic islands
  • Socioeconomic Status: Oppressed
Tall fey with dark skin and heads that appear to be cracked, molten magma. They have pointed ears, burning eyes, and forked flametongues.

Apiperi dwell near, on, or in volcanoes, and they are immune to heat, acid, and poison. They can walk on magma and lava, and their songs and voices can cause volcanic bombs and pyroclasts to launch if they are within a volcano. If they are away from a volcano, they can reach their hands into the ground and melt soil and rock.

All apiperi can turn into a cloud of sulfuric acid once a week.

Apiperi live in small island communities where they get by as fishers, hunters, and gatherers, living simple lives under the volcanoes. They honor the elementals of the volcanoes as spiritual figures, offering them meat and metal every year, but they do not harm others for the sake of the volcanoes. Instead, they commune with its power and use that power to protect themselves from colonials and outsiders.

In Gyrah, they live near the few pyrovolcanoes there, especially in Aeridan and Fengara.

Micanian

Fair people with sky in their hair and stardust on their brows.
  • Lifespan: 1,000 years
  • Diet: Astral fare
  • Habitat: Upper atmosphere or Deep space
  • Socioeconomic Status: Oppressed
Micanians have skyblue hair, paler blue skin, pointed ears, silver eyes, and brows of stardust. If they have facial hair, they have stardust beards as well.

Micanians can see into deep space at night. They can see invisible things, see in the dark, and see radiation. They can walk on clouds and in the air, and they can speak to the constellations. They are able to control stardust if it is near.

Most micanians live in deep space in cities made of nebulae and meteors, but there is a small city of them on Shem in the upper atmosphere above Gyrah. This city is led by a council of ancient micanians who came from afar and cannot die until the nebulae they were born in die. They will one day become stars. The rest are born on Shem and live shorter lives, but they are freer and live in wonder, seeing Shem as a place of energy and life that is rare in their homelands.

Mugoe

Fey of the changing weather.
  • Lifespan: 80-150 years
  • Diet: Tropical fare
  • Habitat: Islands
  • Socioeconomic Status: Oppressed
Mugoes are 6’ tall fey beings with bronze skin, green hair, pointy ears, and a single crescent horn coming out of their foreheads.

All mugoes can walk on clouds. They can breathe in any density of air as long as there is some air present. They can sense changes in the weather coming. They are immune to cold and electricity, and they can see clearly no matter what kind of precipitation is falling or what level of fog, mist, or haze is present.

Mugoes usually dwell in tropical isles where the weather is unpredictable by any other than themselves, though they are often found anywhere with frequently changing weather. They thrive with the changes. They are sailors, fishers, and gatherers, living in mostly egalitarian communities. Imperials often enslave them.

Phase Folk

Fey beings who live within eclipses
  • Lifespan: Unknown
  • Diet: Common fey fare
  • Habitat: Faerie
  • Socioeconomic Status: Feared
Phase folk are 6’ tall fey beings with black and white skin and hair. Their eyes reflect the phase of the eclipse they are formed within.

Phase folk are legendary beings that appear during eclipses. They may remain afterward, disappearing within a set amount of time that only they are aware of.

Phase folk are equally beings of moon, sun, and world. They can see in dark or light. They can see through matter. They are immune to heat and cold. And they can use mirrors as portals.

All phase folk are attuned to a specific eclipse: lunar or solar.

Those connected to a lunar eclipse can turn invisible once per week, wear darkness as their clothing, use shadowspeak to send messages, use dance to teleport between a moon and the world during a full moon, and speak to wolves.

Those connected to a solar eclipse can form an aura around themselves that reveals truths to others, turn river water into cleansing lights, know where their lovers are no matter what, resurrect themselves from the dead once, and protect anyone near them from esoteric attacks.

All phase folk can read portents in the sun, moons, and world. All of them know when a natural disaster is coming. All of them can heal any deep wound or less if they fast for a day. All of them are stronger during an eclipse of any kind. Some phase folk can inflict anger, sadness, sickness, or loneliness on people with a silent charm.

Phase folk are revered among the fey, and their influence has been used historically to make people rulers or leaders. The reverence for them among the fey often means they are assumed to be part of the ruling classes of Faerie, but they aren’t always so.

Many are very religious, known for their worship of cosmic bodies. They have beautiful hymns, rituals, and customs in their faith, and the most powerful among them can speak directly to the elementals of the sun, moon, or planets.
Blood magic and sex magic practices are common among the phase folk.

The cyclical nature of eclipses is a central part of their culture, and they are known to hide for long periods and return to engage with broader fey society.

In the imperial lands, they are viewed as powerful, mysterious, and dangerous fey.

Quri

Tall folk with hair of sunfire.
  • Lifespan : 200 years
  • Diet: Photosynthetic
  • Habitat: Mountains
  • Socioeconomic Status: Privileged oppressed
Quris are 6’ to 7’ tall fey beings with skin like midnight-blue-black ash, hair made of burning sunfire, and eyes that are molten gold.

Quris absorb sunlight for nourishment. Their hair burns at a power of 15/22/29/36. They can pull from it the burning flames and carry them in their hands. They are immune to mundane or elemental heat and fire damage. They can see long distances. If they breathe in deep, they can draw their sunfire hair into their heads, then release it as a coronal aura of intense heat of power 20/30/40/50.

Quris are from mountainous regions closer to the sun, living in seclusion, absorbing sunlight for nourishment, and protecting themselves from conquerors and slavers. Those in the colonies are there either as slaves or refugees from war-torn regions, but many are free and treated with respect because they are privileged for their powers.
