Prospero

Propseri are weather mages who absorb weather aether into themselves through special staves called vanes. They can then release this weather and control it if their will is strong enough.

Vanes

Vanes are special staves made with a weather vane on top. Different materials make for better vanes. Rowan and oak are the best common woods for the shaft, and bronze is the best common metal for the vane. Metal is always preferred for the vane, though some have been made of stone, ceramic, or glass. These are very weak vanes, but they do work. Aetherial metals and woods are better for the vane. Storm-bred rowan or Van's oak are especially potent. Any material that has been struck by lightning will work best, however.

Storm-seeking

Prosperi can sense changes in the weather, usually through aches in their joints. This ability is developed over time as they absorb weather aether.

Communion

In order to commune with the weather, a prospero must meditate out in the open, naked in the midst of the weather. This can be any kind of weather--clement or not, warm or cold, etc. During their meditation, the prospero must be holding their vane and focusing on the feel of the weather around them. They must do this for seven hours, seven days in a row, or for an entire 24-hour period plus one minute, or for 100 hours in five days, or for a single hour if they are hit with lightning during that period. After the relevant time period, they must breathe in as deep as possible and hold their breath for eight minutes while twisting their vane above their heads--twisting, not twirling. At the end of this eight minutes, if their will is strong enough, they will absorb the relevant weather aether.

Release

In order to release the weather they have absorbed, they must channel it out through their vane. To do this, they must have potent will, clear mind, and a stomach full of fresh, clear water. They must chant a special phrase nine times, then breathe through their vane. The weather type will erupt from the vane at this point.

Control

In order to control what they release, they must attune their vane to the weather beforehand. After communing with the weather, they must then take their vane and treat it with a special ointment made of rowan oil, eel fat, or their own blood. If they have done this after communion and before release, they will have control of the weather, assuming their will is strong enough. They can then direct it via moving their vane.

Distillation

Types of weather can be rendered into a form of bijalee that reflects the nature of the weather. See below.

Types of Weather

These are only some kinds of weather as an example:
  • Clement: good weather, clear skies, warm but not hot, light breeze, etc. This is most often wielded to end bad weather, even if briefly. If distilled, it will be a bolt of refreshing warmth.
  • Sunshine: sunshine differs from clement weather in that a prospero can commune with sunshine as long as the sun is shining, even if the weather is otherwise base. They can then release it to to warm an area. If distilled, it will be a bolt of solar heat.
  • Freeze: a freeze, a sudden drop in temperature, usually kills plants. This is used to break heat waves sometimes, or kill certain unwanted blights. If distilled, it will be a ray of intense cold.
  • Cloudy: an overcast day. This is used to relieve an area of burning sun. If distilled, it will release a single dark cloud.
  • Frost: a rime of frozen dew, a softer drop in temperature than a freeze. This is used to break heat weaves sometimes. If distilled, it will release a spray of frost.
  • Fog: thick clouds near the ground. This is often used to conceal movements, especially in war or by smugglers. If distilled, it will release a smaller fog cloud that only covers a single person.
  • Mist: light but concealing vapor. This is often used for concealment as well. If distilled, it will release a spray of cold mist.
  • Light Shower: a sprinkle of rain. This is often used to cool things down or to gently water something. If distilled, it will release a spray of vapor.
  • Sunshower: rain while the sun shines. This is used for special rituals. If distilled, it will release an intense blast of water and heat.
  • Flurries: bursts of light snow. This is used for cooling things down. If distilled, it will release a blast of snow.
  • Deep Chill: very cold weather, well below freezing. This is rarely used, but if it is, it's usually as an assault. If distilled, it will release a bolt of intense cold.
  • Heat Wave: extended high temperatures. This is rarely used, except to fight deep chill. If distilled, it will release a wave of hot air.
  • Sleet: ice pellets mixed with rain or snow. This is rarely used except to make conditions dangerous. If distilled, it will release a slick spray of ice.
  • Hail: hard, large balls or lumps of ice amidst a storm. This is rarely used except as a form of assault. If distilled, it will hurl a spray of hailstones.
  • Snow: basic snow, frozen precipitation. This is used to cool things down, kill fires, or make kids happy. If distilled, it will send a spray of snow.
  • Heavy Rain: a thorough soaking rain. This is used to put out fires and water crops. If distilled, it will send a massive blob of water.
  • Downpour: intense rain, so intense it drenches everything. Potential flooding. This is used to kill fires and relieve droughts. If distilled, it will unleash the equivalent of five firehoses at once.
  • Lightning: electrical discharge. Pretty much just used to destroy, burn, or attack. If distilled, it will be a much smaller but still potent bolt.
  • Thunderstorm: a full-on storm with thunder and lightning. Intense and dangerous and hard to control. Used very rarely and often just for war. If distilled, it will unleash lightning, water, and wind.
  • Gale: very strong winds. Sometimes used to move heavy things. If distilled, it will create a powerful wind "rope".
  • Blizzard: a powerful snowstorm. Used only to fight the worst fires or heat waves. If distilled, it will unleash an intense, powerful blast of ice, snow, and wind.
  • Tornado: a whirlwind, a destructive funnel of wind. Used only to destroy. If distilled, it will unleash a cone of destructive winds.
  • Monsoon: a powerful seasonal wind that brings a period of rain. Used to kill droughts. If distilled, it will unleash a wall of rain.
  • Derecho: a wall of powerful thunderstorms. Used only in war. If distilled, it will unleash a wall of lightning, cloud, wind, and rain.
  • Cyclone: a massive storm, a hurricane or typhoon. Used only in war. If distilled, it will unleash a thunderstorm.
