The title of the Hand of Loathing, "Broken Mask" refers to the object they wear--the mask of the first Hand, which was shattered by the Champion's rage. On average, a Hand lasts about an Epoch or so before the Champion kills them in such a rage. New masks are made every so often, but ever since the first, they are all symbolically broken. The current Broken Mask is a swordsmith named Khopech who wants nothing more than to serve the greatest swordsman in the world.
