Beffardo/Beffarda

On Second Shem, a jester called Belizo Avam, a Talunese performer, made a deal with the Gentleman to become inmortal. As part of the deal, he agreed to serve as an agent of chaos and terror. Eventually, he was destroyed by a wielder of justice, but his Deal allowed him to return, eventually. Upon his return, he wielded the powers of entropy to create a troupe of performers devoted to chaos. These mocking clowns, known as beffardi, are a special variant of a gyroxene.

Belizo Avam

Belizo Avam was a Talunese performer in the Maraddonian Empire who grew up in a powerful merchant family. As the third son, he was set to be sent into military service, but decided to pursue performing arts instead. Finding himself unable to compete with better performers, he resorted to using his monied connections, sabotaging rivals, and spiteful antics to gain fame and fortune. Unfortunately, after an incident wherein there was too much evidence against him in the death of a rival, he had to go on the run. He went east to Ansulym, where he found work for Aeldian and Srisian nobles. Eventually, however, his yearning for wealth and power brought him to the attention of the Gentleman, who made him an offer: all the fame and wealth and power he could imagine, but only if he used his penchant for mockery and chaos in service to another of the Gentleman's clients. Belizo eventually agreed, joining the Indestructibles. By the end of the ensuing civil war, Belizo had been killed, but his deal for fame and wealth and power precluded a permanent death at that time. He returned years later after a sojourn in the Infernal Realm and founded the beffardi.

Belizo did not stick around very long as a leader, but instead let his cruel and chaotic whims take him off to other concerns. The beffardi, however, became a tradition that is now a significant part of the Jesenyan noble courts and entertainment halls. Their entropic powers create displays of horror and wonder for audiences seeking thrills and mocking humor, and their abilities as gyroxenes allow them to also engage in instigatory behaviors when they please.

Mockery

Mockery is the first skill of a beffardo. The ability to say as they please at the expense of others, to insult and cajole, to make someone the butt of a cruel joke, is their talent, and they use it more often to mock the weak and disadvantaged than the rich and powerful - though no one is truly immune.
