Angel

Messengers for the supernal Divines.

Basics

Origins

Fashioned by Divine hand from the waters of the Supernal Realms, crafted in the image of the mafi girma.

Description

Angels exist in a great variety of forms. Some common ones include the following:

  • Human-sized beings with the faces of a human, a lion, an ox, and an eagle. They have human hands, calf’s hooves, and four wings. Two wings stretch upward, symbolizing the crown and throne. Two extend downward, symbolizing the chains and shackles. They glow with an intense light. Their hooves never touch the ground. They fly on the south wind.

  • Beings that appear to be dressed in finest linen with belts of gold. They have bodies like chrysolite, faces like lightning, eyes like flaming torches, arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and voices like the sound of a multitude. Their feet never touch the ground.

  • Beings that have two wings, one wing is made of western red ruby, and the other wings in the east made of green emerald studded with pearls and ruby and topaz, head under the Throne, while their feet are under the earth. Their feet never touch the surface. Babies and animals can see them.

  • Lion-headed angels with glowing wings. Their voices contain the syllables of the Divine Names, unordered. Their bodies may or may not be covered in fur. Their feet never touch the ground.

  • Circles of lavender-gold, surrounded by four fiery wings. Within the circle is a man-like figure with beautiful eyes. Their feet never touch the ground.

  • Crowned warriors bearing maces. Their bodies may or may not be made of stone. Their feet never touch the ground.

  • Supernal fire in the form of a person. Their feet never touch the ground.

  • Children with a candle on their heads and the history of the world on their souls. Their lips are uniquely indented. Their feet never touch the ground.

  • Cloud with flashing fire and an aura of light surrounding a figure the color of electrum within it, each with four faces and four wings. They have straight legs with their feet like those of a calf and gleaming like burnished bronze. Under their wings on their four sides they had the hands of a man. They have the faces of a man, an ox, a lion, and an eagle. They always come from the north. Their hooves never touch the ground.

  • Two burning wheels, one within the other, covered in eyes. They are beryl colored. Fire surrounds them. They never touch the ground. They carry the throne of their Divine, and they chant glorias to them as they do. Their voices are beautiful, and they bring justice and harmony as they move.

  • Fiery, six-winged figures. Their feet never touch the ground.

  • Beings in white robes with the crowns of judges. Their feet never touch the ground.

  • Youthful human-like beings draped in scarlet capes. Their feet never touch the ground.

  • Iridal columns of light within which a beautiful person with grand wings stands. Their feet never touch the ground.

  • Flower-covered beings with three wings, always in pairs, always at the shoulders of those they appear to. Their feet never touch the ground.

  • Eyeless, winged figures in endlessly twirling cages of ivory. Their feet never touch the ground.

  • Golden giants with beautiful golden wings and six eyes around their heads. Each of them is marked on the chest with a symbol: the sceptre of mortality; the horn of the beasts; the emblem of the sun; the staff of minerals; the mound of earth; the crest of water; or the leaves of flora. Their feet never touch the ground.

  • Beings with six hundred wings, each of which covers the horizon. Jewels fall from the wings, pearls and rubies. Their feet never touch the ground.

  • Winged people with circular halos glowing above their heads. Their feet never touch the ground.

  • 144,000 swirling rings covered in shining eyes that drip tears of supernal water, surrounding an orb of blue flame that pulses with the heartbeat of the universe.

  • Taller than the horizon, wider than the sky, greater than the sea, unfathomable to mortal minds.

  • Statues of any kind.

  • A single mote of dust.

Procreation

Angels reproduce at the behest of their Divines, in any manner their Divines offer or allow. The three most common methods are as follows:

  • Violently splitting down the middle to create a perfect clone of themself.

  • Asexual budding.

  • Sexual reproduction with one another.

They cannot reproduce outside their species without Divine intervention.

Powers

Angels have powers granted to them by the Divine they serve. Service grants them power, and in turn, they may grant power to those who serve them. They do this because they can generate celeste water, which is pure distilled supernal essence, the holiest of energies which purifies souls and burns away sin, corruption, and evil, heals trauma and pain, sorrow and weariness. They generate this through service and release it by condensing it out of the air around them at will or weeping it through their tears. The more Divine favor they have from their Service, the more celeste water they can generate.

Specific Powers

Other powers vary by the Divine and what they wish to grant the angel, but some common ones include the following:

  • Aura: an aura of any supernal essence that protects them or empowers those around them; an aura of celeste water forms a bubble of blue that repels all infernal energies.

  • Soulspeech: the ability to speak directly the metaphysical essence of a mortal allows them to be perfectly understood and to influence the actions of the person (without controlling them).

  • Stylus (Pen): often given to scribes, this is a pen with ink made from celeste water that allows them to write holy words.

  • Oculus (Sight): the ability to see souls or other esoteric energies.

  • Aspectu (Glance): the ability to analyze or assess with a brief look or glance at something.

  • Lituus (Trumpet): often given to heralds, this trumpet will call other angels or supernal beings, cause the songs of heaven to ring out and echo and drive away evil, or shatter infernal barriers.

  • Capio (Task): many angels are given a specific task to undertake, a quest or job that they must do. As they perform this task, they gain extra favor from their Divine.

  • Infundere (Infusion): the ability to touch and infuse someone with celeste water, purifying them and protecting them.

  • Gating: teleporting from the Supernal Realm to anywhere within the Spirit Realm.

  • Speech and Languages: the ability to speak any tongue and understand any tongue.

  • Gladius (Sword): often given to warriors, their swords usually are made of supernal metals and have powers that make them against infernal beings.

  • Scutum (Shield): often given to warriors, their shields protect from infernal powers and can be sacrificed to destroy stronger infernal powers.

  • Coram (Presence): often given to leaders, their mere presence has an overwhelming power over any mortals who are near them.

  • Teneo (Absorbing): often given to guardians, this power allows them to absorb infernal powers, sins, trauma, or wounds of their wards.

  • Augere (Influence): often given to guardians, this power allows them to metaphysically whisper the guidance to their wards.

  • Tanqia (Purify): the ability to wash others in their celeste tears and purify their souls.

  • Yahfaz (Salvation): the ability to bring someone’s soul into the Supernal Realm to save it.

  • Yaetaniq (Embrace): the ability to perfectly protect someone by holding them close.

  • Halo: near imperviousness to any attack or infernal power.

Thirteen Powers

Angels may only have up to 13 powers in their lifetimes. This limit is a reflection of their status as neither Divine nor mortal. Their 13 powers can be swapped out if their Divine allows for it, but requires that they be in the Supernal Realm and directly interact with their Divine to make the request. They cannot simply do so at will.

Other Energies

For angels who serve Supernal Divines other than Nyina W'ijuru, the Mother of Heaven, some common powers include the following:

Angelology

Mortals who take up service to angels both empower the angels they serve and gain powers from them. Angels acts as a liaison from their Divine to the Divine’s mortal followers and are able to grant them powers based on the amount of celeste water and favor they gain from their Divine.

Weaknesses

Infernum weakens angels. If an angel disobeys their Divine, they fall and become infernal. Most then kill themselves, though some embrace becoming infernal or even do so intentionally.

Culture

Angels serve their Divines, doing all the work of the Supernal Realms. They are protectors, empowerers, healers, servants, messengers, administrators, and leaders. Angelic culture is the culture of service to salvation and kindness.

Ranks

The original angels were split into ranks by the Nyina W'ijuru, Mother of Heaven:

  • Chayot, those closest to her

  • Ophan, the charioteers

  • Er'el, the valiant ones

  • Hashmal, flashing fire and storm

  • Seraph, the burning ones

  • Malak, the mid-ranking angels

  • Eloh, those closest to other Divines

  • Bene Eloh, those who serve the elohim

  • Cherub, who protected the Manifests

  • Ishu, those closest to the affairs of mortals

Later, messiahs formed their own structures:

First Sphere:

  • Seraph, caretakers of the thrones of the Divines

  • Cherub, who guard the World Tree

  • Sedes, the Thrones, the elders, through whom judgment is discharged

Second Sphere:
  • Dominatio, who regulate the duties of lower angels

  • Lucens, the Virtues, who carry miracles and protect nature

  • Potestas, the Authorities, who restrain evil forces

Third Sphere:
  • Principatus, who guide and protect nations, groups, and faiths

  • Archangel, of which there are only seven, who protect special nations and countries

  • Rasul, those most directly interacting with individual mortals, often just called "angels"

Guardian angels were their own special class, who protected the souls of all mortals.

And Radiant Angels are divided into seven "heavens" or bands of the rainbow, the first through seventh malkuks.

All of the angels in the Heavenly Host have their own, more militaristic hierarchy:

  • Taxiarch, the single marshal of the Heavenly Host

  • Yazata, the generals

  • Na'wa, the weapon makers

  • Darda'il, the choir

  • Hafaza, the archers

  • Mu'aqqib, the foot soldiers

And finally, every Supernal Divine has a metatron, an angelic herald.

Complete list of ranks (unranked):

  • Archangel, Aeonian angels, second rank of the third sphere who serve Messiahs

  • Bene Eloh, eighth rank of those who serve the Mother of Heaven

  • Chayot, first rank of those who serve the Mother of Heaven
