Description

Natural born werewolves bear a striking resemblance to their animalsake in their normal form. They often have unibrows, curved fingernails, low-set ears, and a swinging stride. Infected or cursed werewolves appear as they did before being infected in normal form, but they have bristles under their tongue. Werewolf babies are usually born with a caul or a birthmark, and they are always born with hair.

In wolf form, they appear to be large versions of their given animal, usually a particularly carnivorous breed. They have human eyes, though, and can speak. Infected werewolves do not have tails. They run on three legs and use the fourth to make it look like they have tails.

In mixed form, they appear to be anthropomorphic wolves.

Procreation Werewolves are created many, many ways. Some are born to other werewolves and live as natural werewolves. Some are infected by other werewolves, either in utero or by being bitten. Some are cursed into being werewolves for a variety of reasons. Some make pacts with demons to gain the powers of wolves. Some are affected by natural lunar magics. Some come to it through shamanic ritual. Werewolf mothers will induce labor under a triple new moon if they can, so that they can avoid the mor epainful birth of a transformed child.
Magic One in a million have soul magic. One in a million have heart magic. Mind magic is possible. Body magic is very effective. Void is possible. Faith is not uncommon.
Special Powers

Werewolves can shift form between "human," wolf, & mixed forms. Each form has advantages: "human" form blends with society, wolf form has all the advantages the wolf has (pack mentality, hunting skill, heightened smell & hearing, sharp teeth, stealth), & the mixed form combines the two.

Each werewolf is born under a specific full moon (one of the three, but most often the Grey Moon) that determines when they will be susceptible to lunacy. On the full moon, an uncontrolled, berserk transformation takes place, usually to the mixed form. During these periods, they savagely attack & spread their disease if they are infected. During other periods, they can control the shift, except during the new moon phase of their particular moon.

Within three hours of transforming back to human after an uncontrolled transformation, there will be fur under the skin of a werewolf.

A cursed werewolf can be trapped in their wolf form if their clothing is stolen. They also suffer from lunacy on the winter solstice, regardless of the moon's state, and on the holy day of a god determined by the faith of those who cursed them, if a person cursed them.

There are many ways to stop a werewolf who is lunatic. By keeping the person up for several days before the full moon, they can be rendered too exhausted and sleep through the lunacy. This is dangerous, though, because it requires extreme exhaustion and might kill the werewolf, especially if they transform anyway. Wolfsbane can be used to weaken the werewolf during transformation, rendering them less able to harm anyone. It has been found that the removal of the adrenal glands can curb a werewolf's transformation powers. Those who became werewolves by demonic powers are susceptible to countering holy powers. A headblow by a knife is said to be the exact level of cerebral damage to render a werewolf insensate for the full moons but not longer. Crucifying a werewolf through their lunacy is known to be effective in incapacitating them, whereas simple ropes or chains or cages are easily destroyed. Speaking a werewolf's True Name three times each night of the full moon will give a person control over them. A cursed werewolf who is cursed for some crime they committed can be shamed by the revelation of their crime to them while they are lunatic into meekness, but only if they are repentant while not lunatic. Conversion to worship of the Sun Goddess can curb the effects of the full moons, and holiness in general can be invoked to calm a werewolf, if the prayer is powerful enough.

Cursed werewolves have poison-coated claws and a gaze that can paralyze cattle and children.

Certain magically empowered werewolves are attached to a wolf's pelt. These werewolves are rendered normal if their pelts are burnt or otherwise significantly destroyed. Cursed werewolves who are bound toa wolf's pelt can have their curse broken if someone of noble intent burns or otherwise significantly destroys their wolf's pelt.

Werewolves have heigtened smelling & hearing & weak vision. They are very skilled at hunting & tend to live in packs, in accordance with their nature. They are fast sprinters.

If a wound is not made by silver, it will heal quickly. They are extremely resistant to disease & poisons.

Werewolves also have the ability to control wolves by speaking their tongue and having a commanding presence about them.

Werewargs have red glowing eyes and can possess the bodies of others if theirs is destroyed by anything other than silver or magic or faith. Weregarms also protect the Gates of Mortality and Divinity.

Weaknesses Silver, magic, or faith is required to kill a werewolf. Sun magic or faith is especially effective. After lunacy, a werewolf returned to human form is weak, debilitated, and in a fit of nervousness for an hour or more.
Culture

The first werewolves were night-hunters for early human tribes in what is now Jesenya. They worshiped the moons, and they would pray for the strength, skill, and senses of a wolf each night for two weeks. When the full moon would come, they would sleep the night through, and on the next full moon, they would gain the powers of wolves. These wolf-shamans' descendants came to the wolf powers naturally, and soon, their entire nation was composed of werewolves. They were spread all across Jesenya, but many of them lived in or eventually settled in the area Lleuad Peninsula south of Berellia, where they created a city that is now known as the City of the Moons. These were the first grey wolf [see: Eurasian] werewolves.

In the City of the Moons, there lived a king whose lycanthropy had been purged from him by a powerful druid over a minor argument. The king appealed to the Goddess to return his form so that he might lead his people, and she bid him journey seven years and seven days around the world, finding all of her people scattered about the world. If he returned in seven years and seven days with three hundred and thirty-three of her people, he would be given his powers back. He did so, and he created a great, multifaceted city thereafter.

Near the City of the Moons there was an ash tree by a wide lake. People would come to this tree and sleep the night, then swim across the lake in the morning so that they could take the form of a wolf. If they were respectful of the Lunar Huntress, they would be made into werewolves, but if they were power-seekers or otherwise villainous, they would be turned into wolves. If they harmed no one for nine years, they would then become werewolves if they swam back across the lake. This lake is called Blaidd Llyn, and it still holds these powers. It is well protected, however, by priestesses of the Moons, who call themselves the Hounds of the Goddess.

There are many, many other werewolf societies in the world, however. There are outlaw bands generally composed of infected werewolves driven mad or to desperation by being outcasts.

The first cursed werewolves were a family of degenerates in central Ranu. One ritually murdered a child. The second served human flesh to his wife. The third ate the entrails of a child. The fourth dug up his recently deceased son and ate him. These four were turned into monsters so that all would know them to be monsters. The first was cursed by the child's mother, but he felt no regret. He made a pact with a demon thereafter to become more powerful as a werewolf, thus inventing the ritual to do so and creating the trend amongst fell souled people to do so. He was the first night wolf werewolf. The second was cursed by the Mother of the Moons for feeding intelligent flesh to her priestess, and he was cast out of the faith and sent to wander the world. He was the first dire wolf werewolf. The third was cursed by the village elder, and he found remorse after a ten year long journey. He broke the curse through repentence and found his faith anew. He was the first black wolf werewolf. The fourth gave in to his madness and never returned to human form. He was the first werewarg.

The first infected werewolves were afflicted by the cursed werewolves and took the forms they took.

In the Wolfwood in Ranu, there is a forest where cursed werewolves have been gathering for Ages. If they are those cursed with being bound to pelts, they hang their pelts from the trees and hope another werewolf (or kindly stranger) will burn it in good faith.

The first magically created werewolves were the various great mages in the distant past. The first used a wolfskin belt on his naked body, turning into the first steppe wolf werewolf. The second used a whole wolfskin, and she became the first red wolf werewolf. The third used a magical salve all over her body, and she became the first forest king werewolf. The fourth drank the water from a wolfprint, and he became the first Juazan wolf (see: Mexican) werewolf. The fifth bathed in an enchanted stream, and she became the first Lyrillan wolf werewolf. The fifth bound herself to a wolf familiar until they became as one. She became the first winter wolf werewolf.

In Omaev, the people believe they are descended of wolves, and the few amongst them that are werewolves are honored.

The other types of werewolf are desert wolf [see: Arabian] of eastern Mati; Altic wolf of Cassaru; red wolf in northwestern Palhur; tundra wolf in northern Ranu; Taggaran wolf; Vimalan wolf; changu wolf in Majon; Palhuric [see: Gregory's] wolf in western Palhur; Tenzanese [see: Hokkaido and Honshu] wolf in Tenzanai; werewaheela in southern Palhur; stone wolf underground; lunar wolf on the moons (react to the phases of Shem); great wolf in the Wolfwood region; weregarms in northern Ranu; and stalker wolf werewolves in Idangar. Enolycan werewolves live in the between places.
