Wactawa Garkora is an iguanawoman Shaman of Flowers from the jungles of Kali. She is 24. She trained under the old shaman of her tribe, Gai'lah Agoruk. She lived in comfort, working as a shaman and loremaster for her tribe. Her mother was a huntress and her father was a craftsman. She grew up as a normal member of the tribe, and she was chosen for apprenticeship to the shaman at the age of 9. From then on, she worked hard and proved herself. Her worship of the Flowers is reflected in her personality, hopeful, optimistic, upbeat. Her upbeat personality makes her many friends, though her emotional nature sometimes causes moods or funks that drive people away. Her connections to the iguana tribes is strong, but she is largely unconnected to the wider world. She is part of the Circle of Flowers (representing the Lilac), a group of shamans from the iguana tribes.
Her friends include
Nugaal Koranna, Shaman of Flowers (Chrysanthemum);
Te'ahanu Killauk, Shaman of Flowers (Rose);
Bahalak Nivash, a hunter of her tribe;
Mallyhammak Korgaulu, a child of her tribe who clearly wants to be her apprentice; and
Nezzeen Pollyauk, a weaver in her tribe. She is being courted by
Noannal'auk Kromau, another weaver in the tribe. Her rivals include
Shaaul' Gurkaran, Shaman of Flowers (Sunflower) and
Luossk Kurnalal, Shaman of Flowers (Bellflower). Her enemies include
T'igan Lioq, a werejaguar shaman whose tribe is a long-standing enemy of hers. She considers
Irroquan Kromaru, of the Alligator peoples, and
Calam Uguimar, of the Jaguar peoples, to be professional associates.
As a shaman and loremaster, she knows many tales that explain the world around her. This gives her insights into the cosmology of Shem, but leaves her ignorant of the technologically driven nations' customs and mores. She has only recently begun to explore the world, as she has begun her quest. She is terrified that her absence will spell doom for her tribe, but she also secretly fears that they will get along just fine without her. She hopes to break the curse of her Gift and return to the tribe, where she will use what new knowledge she gains to their betterment.
She follows the tenets of her faith closely, but she has nagging self-doubts that conflict with it. She is deeply ashamed of a time in her past when her doubts caused one of her warriors to be hurt. Her hesitation to tell him which path to take as she guided him spiritually through a dangerous area of the jungles caused him to be attacked by members of the Lioq tribe. That warrior was saved by the quick intervention of her master and a few skilled hunters, but it left her with an abiding fear and shame. Her dedication, however, has guided many in the tribe for years thereafter, and at times, her ability to guide them has seemed nothing short of miraculous.
Her darkest moment, however, was when she was guiding her old master on his deathbed. She entered a vision-quest with him and found dark secrets in his past. Unsure how to proceed, she let him take control (which is generally a bad idea with the dying). He lead her to a great pool deep in the recesses of his mind and soul, and he told her to drink from it. She had many doubts, but her mission to overcome her doubts prompted her to drink anyway. The pool proved to be the
Draught of Metaphysical Poison. When she awoke, her master was dead, violently eviscerated, and her soul was poisoned. It is a daily trial with her to resist its compulsions toward evil.
She believes in empowerment, guidance, optimism, and adaptation, and as such, she tries very hard to live up to those things. Though her self-doubts sometimes lead her down the wrong paths, she refuses to give up. Her personal symbol is the lilac. She is a 5'7" anthropomorphic iguana with green and lavender scales, accentuated by random red patches. She has a dewlap on her neck and spines down her back and tail. Her third eye is a pale, milky yellow. She has a stubby horn on her snout.
