Vewelians detest magic. They find it uncomfortable to be around & view it as obscene. Their jetwood cities are magic-free zones, & any magical creature that comes within it slowly dies. Unlike most voided areas, the void in a Vewelian jetwood is directed to kill all magic.

Vewelians, lacking magic, tend to focus on the sciences--biology, void science, chemistry, & geology being the primary areas of study. They value science above all things, much like other void races.

Like all elves, they bear an inherent superior attitude that other races usually deem as arrogant. Furthermore, all elven societies are matrilineal.

Shqixes are sacred to them.

Vewelians are born into specially made baths of void-infused water. If they are born into the air of Shem, the natural magical ambiance will kill them, even in the Vewelian subterranean jetwoods. Their childhood is spent in the dark of the subterranean cities, and most Vewelians only know their parents by voidsenses. They do not see the sun until after they have Bonded.

All elves Bond with another living thing. Vewelians most often Bond to the shqixes, the void rats, that are rampant in their cities, but they have also been known to bond with null spiders, void salamanders, ro'tuuriqs (void bears), ototsiqis (void snakes), iqixiquons (void goats), jet tulips, jet drakes, void booms, trees of nothings, opoxy plants, void berry trees, takahes, curassows, jacanas, or currawongs if they happen to be above ground. The most powerful Vewelians Bond with void mantises.

After they have Bonded, Vewelian children are usually sent to school. Depending on their families, they will be sent to a scientific school, a religious school, an industrial school, or a politically aligned school. These are the four most important institutions in Vewelian society. Science is the backbone of their society. Religion is mostly social, but the depths of their faith cannot be denigrated. Industry is built upon science, but the technological and commercial aspects of it set it apart, and politics run through everything a Vewelian does. The military is tied to each of these in its own way, but it is also divided amongst them and does not work as an independent institution.

When a Vewelian reaches the age of 100 or so, there is usually a party amongst the family where the Vewelian is presented with special presents, encouraged to join various facets of the family's official connections (political, religious, industrial, scientific, military, etc.), asked embarrassing questions about his or her love life, and often as not, quietly allowed to get inebriated with his or her friends. Within a week of this, the Vewelian is expected to begin the final leg of their education, choosing a focus and thus a path. A common theme of the inebriation aspect of the party is unexpected pregnancies, and thus, marriages or quiet "handlings" often occur within a few months of the party as well.

Within ten years of turning 100, a Vewelian usually finishes their education and begins a career, officially declares their associations politically and so on, and gets married. However, if the Vewelian turns to science (or medicine) as a career, their education continues for another 50 years or so instead. While Vewelian society has many careers outsiders would recognize (lawyers, craftsmen, artists, farmers, and so on), there are some things unique to or generally associated with Vewelian society that bear noting:

Irritologists are scientists who study void. Antithaumatugists are people who specialize in fighting magic in all forms. Infusers are those who make mundane things into void-bearing things. Vewelian religion is a decentralized worship of the Voidfather. Vewelian art tends to involve sculpture, void-painting, or what humans would term avant garde music. Irrito-engineering is applied void science.

Major industries include subterranean/void agriculture, mining, tunneling, voidrail, urban development, armaments manufacturing, textiles, and pharmacology.

The major political parties are identified by animals, but not all members are Bonded to said animals: Mantises are conservatives, shqixes are for the common folk, beetles are religiously affiliated, ro'tuuriqs are pro-military and nationalistic, iqixiquons are pro-agriculture, drakes are all about mining, spiders are known to be ruthless and fluid, salamanders are anti-magical fanatics, jacanas are pro-surface expansion, currawongs are pro-surface conquest, ototsiqis are moderates, and tulips are progressives.

Marriages amongst Vewelians are not especially complicated. The woman stomps a jar of void, the man swears fealty to her family. They remove behind a screen and (hopefully just) kiss, and then there's a party. More important is the rituals surrounding childbirth: the man must serve the woman during her pregnancy hand and foot. The gestation period is five years, so the mother must be constantly cared for. When it comes time for the child to be born, the man must either acquire or prepare a bath of voidwater for the child to be born into and bathed in so it may survive in the air of Shem.

Like all elves, female Vewelians are capable of Re-Bonding after each child is born. This process usually involves finding a new type of void-creature to Bond with so as to influence the children, but amongst Vewelians, the practice is rare.

Vewelian government is dominated by elves in their middle age. It is something of an industrial oligarchy, with the head industrialists openly controlling government officials and political parties. This is very rarely considered negatively. Vewelians firmly believe that industrial and scientific successes merit influence over societal standards. Indeed, if a new scientific discovery makes an industry obsolete, they accept this as the natural consequence of scientific discovery. The government consists of one branch headed by the Qalzhanij, roughly translated to "dictator," who attains power based on which party owns the most shares in the government. The government is in charge of making and enforcing laws. Politics focus on currying favor from industries, the faith, and research firms. The parties often have their own agendas and seek support to achieve them.

In middle age, once their children are born and mostly grown up, Vewelians tend to drift apart, focusing on their work. By the time they are old enough to retire, they often seek complete seclusion and the quiet of the void. At death, Vewelians are given to the void, their bodies utterly nullified.
