| Description | Vesars appear to be semi-anthropomorphized rattlesnakes. Their heads are snake-like, their torsos are humanoid, and their arms are humanoid. They have no legs, for their lower body is that of a snake. Their tails end in rattles. There are two major breeds: diamondback and sidewinder. Diamondbacks tend to be brown, yellow, grey, olive, or even black, with lighter toned diamond patterns on their backs. Sidewinders tend to be hued to be camouflaged in the deserts. Both breeds stand about 6' tall. |
| Procreation | Follows the mother. Vesars give semi-live birth. They hold their eggs within them while gestating, and when they hatch, they give birth. |
| Magic | One in five million have heart or soul magic. Mind and body magic are possible. Void is possible. Faith is not uncommon. |
| Special Powers | All ophidian races have skills with sneaking and seduction. Ophidian races also have knowledges of medicines and poisons outside their own, and they tend to have much plant and fungal lore. Furthermore, they have a powerful connection to the Divine, giving them a natural bonus to faith rolls. One in every hundred thousand has some of the following abilities: immortality, cloudwalking, space survival, rainbow crafting, spirit speech, one time rebirth, commanding presence, soul-shaping, waterwalking, one time resurrect, horns, invisibility, thunder-making, rain call, unpierceable scales, shining scales, breath of disease, and know own death. All ophidian races are excellent hunters. All ophidian races have a higher probability of left-handedness. Vesars have a rattle at the end of their tails that has an automatic intimidation score. Their bites are very venomous. The venom is hemotoxic. Vesars have incredible striking speed. They have no external ears, but they can hear quite well. Their sense of smell is excellent. Diamondbacks are excellent swimmers. Sidewinders move around in a sideways manner to reduce wind-resistance. Vesars are natural defenders. They have a dominating presence amongst ophidoids (save nagas and ophidians), and they are known for their sense of truth. They are imminently trustworthy, being trusted with messages especially. If one gives a prayer to a vesar, they will carry it unto the gods. Vesars have some ability to "true" the winds, making them fair or violent. |
| Weaknesses | Vesars molt once a year, leaving them vulnerable for two weeks. If their rattle becomes wet, it will not work. |
| Culture | Vesars are not overly social people. They make homes in what they can find, eking out simple lives in their solitary homes. They do the job before them and get on with their quiet lives. Vesars raise their children only for about 8 years, before setting them free to follow their own paths. By this age, they are already fairly formidable beings. Vesars come together rarely, but when they do, the first interaction is a dance, called the Dance of Rattles. Their skill at this dance determines who is given more respect. Their rattles are used in communication, mostly as warnings and alarms. Because of the extreme cold of the desert nights, sidewinders will remain social somewhat after their youth, huddling together for warmth on particularly cold nights. Diamondbacks, being good swimmers, have made special rattle caps to keep their rattles dry. All vesars love to sun themselves and rest near springs and wells. Crossing a vesar will earn the interloper a harsh vendetta from their victim. |
