Torturer

Causers of intense harm in order to extract information or simply for the sake of harm.

Hottupali

The Red Grith employs torturers who wield body magic to get results. They are called hottupalis.

Hottupalis know how to extract someone's organs without killing them instantly. Their methods allow a person who has lost an organ - even a heart - live for up to six hours. They like to show their victims the organs as they torture them. Hottupalis are not nice people. They are employed by the Red Grith to extract information from or simply bring agony to their enemies. There aren't many who do this for the Red Grith, and those who do scare the shit out of everyone else in the Red Grith. They're also called "the organ-grinders", though this is not an accurate description of what they do.

Like kavashes, they use special diet and exercise in order to access their magic. Their special diet is regular consumption of magical grains, spices, and milk mixed into a cereal called nimusti. This may vary by species, however. The Red Grith provides this to their hottupalis, who eat it along with a heavy diet of bloody meat. The special exercises vary by body and intention, but most hottupalis seek to be strong and intimidating. Normal exercises may get them such a body, but the special exercises, which involve excessive amounts of lifting, punching, and push/pull ups, allow them to eventually control their body magically. Part of the exercises are meditations that allow them to know their body inside and out. If they can achieve this and keep to their diet, after months of work, they begin to gain full control. They gain a point of body magic skill per six months they keep to their routine and diet for the first eight points (0-8), then it extends to one point per year for the next three (9-11), then one point per three years for the next three (12-14), then one point per five years for the next three (15-17), then one point per seven years for the next three (18-20), then one point per ten years for the next three (21-23), then one point per twelve years for the next three (24-26). It continues to extend in length after that.

There are different ways to wield body magic once it is possessed:
  • Via physical strike (slap, punch, kick, tackle) with skin-to-skin contact to affect another person negatively.
  • Via sheer will power to affect one's own internal processes.
  • Via self-harm if they intend to alter their own form.
In order to practice their grim trade, hottupalis also feed their victims a mixture of magical grain alcohol, spices, and raw meat, called malucarne. This mixture is ground up (which is where the "grinders" pejorative comes from) and forcefed to the victims. Then they use their body magic skills to alter their bodies temporarily, beating them such that their organs come out of their mouths, but their bodies temporarily bypass that function for up to six hours. During this time, the victims are questioned with the promise of getting their organs back. They don't always give them back.

Jahinour

When the Violet Grith wishes to torture someone, they don't touch their bodies - they destroy them emotionally.

The Violet Grith employs only a handful of torturers, usually already potent fey, and these jahinours have fey magic to affect others' emotions. If they are not already fey, they trade away physical strength for emotion magic. If they are already fey, they are usually those born with power to affect emotions.

Jahinoors use fey charms to alter the emotions of others. They have some of these charms to use:
  • Word of laughter
  • Chant of horror
  • Rhyme of anxiety
  • Whisper of haunting
  • Song of arousal
  • Word of boredom
  • Chant of terror
  • Rhyme of doubt
  • Whisper of confusion
  • Song of disgust
  • Word of shame
  • Chant of frustration
  • Rhyme of guilt
  • Whisper of panic
  • Song of regret
  • Word of shyness
  • Chant of suffering
  • Rhyme of anticipation
  • Whisper of admiration
  • Song of curiosity
  • Word of desire
  • Chant of hope
  • Rhyme of loneliness
  • Whisper of relief
  • Song of surprise
They start with one each of song, word, rhyme, chant, and whisper. Each one inflicts the emotion listed on the target(s) at a power equal to the PRS of the user. They use these to torment their targets, staying out of sight, using their charms, taunting them with good things then hitting them with awful feelings, until they are broken.

Membak

The Green Grith does not employ many torturers, but those they do are used to inflict terror and pain on the worst members of the industrial class. They wield the power of lava to do so.

Lava is not commonly found in Haenor or the core of Endruin, but old igneous rock is available. The Green Grith recreates lava by heating igneous rock to the point that it melts down. When they find someone of the right temperament and devotion to be a membak, they begin training them in the power of lava, which is extremely dangerous and often results in physical damage even to those who do so successfully. The training requires acclimating to the heat, plunging their arms fully into lava, and rituals of bodily sacrifice. At the end of the yearslong process, they are physically changed but capable of creating and controlling lava. They a few basic powers: the ability to melt stone with their touch, the ability to hold molten stone without harming themselves, and the ability to control the temperature of that stone as they apply it ot their victims.

The hotter the lava, the more damage it causes. The membak can control it very precisely, but there is a threshhold beyond which if they go, it will actually damage them. This varies by individual, as they must roll STR+6 vs. the heat of the lava they wield. Thus, they can make the lava any heat between 1 and 42 (though it takes a round to raise or lower it 3 points from its starting temp of 16), but they must roll STR+6 every round against it or suffer damage.

Membaks terrify even other members of the Green Grith. To send someone to them is to sentence them to agony and physical damage no one deserves. Only the worst destroyers of the world and nature are ever sent to them, and oftentimes, only the threat of it is necessary. Those who become membaks are hard, cruel, and often fueled by a rage against a cruel world that goes beyond the normal outrage, usually because of some personal tragedy caused by the polluting class.
