Quack

Practitioners of illicit medicine. Despite the name, most are very skilled at medicine; they simply use medicinal arts the ruling class disapproves of.

Chikitsak

The Blue Grith keeps many illegal clinics throughout the poorer parts of the city. They have three kinds of illicit medical specialist: general street medics who use their own blood to heal others, back-alley abortionists who use their connections with their own matrilineal line to draw wisdom and skill, and therapeutic medics who have the power to calm and soothe people emotionally. Part of the Commitee for Support.

Chikitsaks are all-purpose healers using forbidden magic. To access this magic, they must make a great sacrifice and create a special medicine in a magical pot. They are taught for years the arts and work of healing by a mentor in the Blue Grith, then guided through the rites of sacrifice that will give them the power to share their own blood to heal others.

Their mentor will teach them the six esoteric arts of the healer - blood of life, clay of life, true listening, empathy, guiding flow, and careful binding. They are also taught the importance of sacrifice, specifically the sacrifice of their life. They sacrifice their life not via violence, but by devoting it to healing and compassion, putting others above oneself constantly. This level of giving is often detrimental to them, but the power of their healing blood sustains them.

Once they are trained and have proven their devotion, they must create a magical pot to store their medicines in. It must first be made from clay that contains no infernal essence (which isn't hard to come by) and etched with symbols of the body (blood and heart, bone, flesh and muscle, viscera, the mind, humors, and hair and nails). The pot is fired, then filled with river water mixed with the chikitsak's blood. This is mixed with their mentor's blood, frozen or boiled (depending on time of year), then filled again. The process repeats until the pot is filled with a thick blood reduction. This is used as their medicine; it will work only if they are truly devoted and have mastered the six arts of the healer.

These healers are very rare; the level of devotion required is difficult to attain, especially in a society that criminalizes them (for one thing, the ruling class sees it as a waste of blood). They also do not have the full power of healers who are trained and study in places that have full resources, which prevents chikitsaks from achieving full-blood healing. Regardless, those few who exist within the Blue Grith are valued and revered as some of their best healers.

Dravilec

The Blue Grith keeps many illegal clinics throughout the poorer parts of the city. They have three kinds of illicit medical specialist: general street medics who use their own blood to heal others, back-alley abortionists who use their connections with their own matrilineal line to draw wisdom and skill, and therapeutic medics who have the power to calm and soothe people emotionally. Part of the Commitee for Support.

Dravilecs gain the power to calm and soothe people's emotions by making a vow of non-violence.

The vow includes any act of self-defense. Any act of violence, no matter how justified, will violate their vow and strip them of powers. They do not gain powers until a year into their vow. Accidents do not violate the vow unless they were plainly avoidable, but the vow does include actions that may not seem like direct violence - voting to support war, doing nothing to try to stop it, supporting exploitation or oppression, etc. Indeed, even things such as causing hunger or illness can violate the vow if one is not careful. Dravilecs eat only that which has not died by anyone's hand - fallen fruit and never-alive minerals. Not even honey, vegetables, or found materials that were once alive but butchered or killed, even humanely. They also avoid harming any animal or plant, any living thing at all, except to clean their own body.

The vow must be spoken solemnly, made on their own life, and given to the river. As this vow is extremely difficult to live up to in a world of violence, there are very few dravilecs.

Once they have made it a year into their vow - a very rare occurrence - they gain the power to exude peace and calm. Because this might alert the authorities to their powers, they isolate themselves and practice meditation until they can draw that aura in and make it part of their bodies, instead channeling it through touch. They study and practice massage in order to soothe the emotions of their clients. Working for the Blue Grith, their main set of patients are the poor and oppressed.

Emlyze

The Blue Grith keeps many illegal clinics throughout the poorer parts of the city. They have three kinds of illicit medical specialist: general street medics who use their own blood to heal others, back-alley abortionists who use their connections with their own matrilineal line to draw wisdom and skill, and therapeutic medics who have the power to calm and soothe people emotionally. Part of the Commitee for Support.

Emlyzes are healers who focus on reproductive health, mostly providing healthcare to the poorest who are dealing with pregnancies. They are the only source of abortions for the poor, as abortion is criminalized for all but the ruling class.

An emlyze learns their craft from a mentor in the Blue Grith, learning actual medical lore and knowledge, including surgery, herbalism, and psychology, but not as indepth as one might in a full medical school. They also learn the arts of ancestral memory and the power of aemoa, the energy derived from reaching back to ancestors before the Fall. They do this by engaging in ancient practices handed down mentor to mentor, mother to mother, parent to parent, involving meditation, special substances, and deep visions. Almost anyone can access their ancestral memory, though it is not easy, but to access ancestors from before the Fall requires eradicating all patriarchal assumptions and indoctrinations first. One must be entirely free of patriarchal values to be able to go back that far.

Once someone breaks past that barrier, they may access it only briefly without being drawn into it. Most, therefore, either connect with a single ancestor or small number of them, or they only go back occasionally, or, as the emlyzes do, they focus on one kind of ancestor. In this case, they focus on healers and caretakers. They often have an ancestral guide, one from just before the Fall, and a handful of preferred ancestors to connect with, all of them some kind of healer. In order to access them, they associate some object with them, usually a medical device or tool or something they use in the course of taking care of others. They use that focus to instantly connect and gain wisdom or advice. They can also draw powers, skills, and abilities from their preferred ancestors, but in order to do this, they need to spend more time and effort than a quick connection via their focus. Usually, they need to enter a trance (using meditation and an hallucinogen) for a few hours and find the ability, skill, or power in a symbolic vision, led by their ancestral guide. Any skill, power, or ability drawn from their ancestors may only be temporary. If they hold onto it for more than a few hours, they risk having the ancestor's memories over take and replace their own.

Emlyzes' focus on healing means they have a great number of healing skills to choose from, and the skills known before the Fall were advanced in terms of how they could treat reproductive health issues beyond what is available even legally in Haenor. They also provide gender-affirming care.

Fuala

The Violet Grith employs old wives tales and ancient stories of healing and health and life to help its protectees.

A fuala studies traditional medicine to learn how to heal, and most of their abilities are use of herbs and medicinal practices. They do, however, take on magical powers from fey benefactors to help heal more difficult injuries, maladies, and diseases. They gain these powers by trading bits of their own life to the fey, a few hours or days at a time, depending on what they need. This causes them to age prematurely.
Malady Time lost
Flesh wound 1 minute
Mild fever 30 minutes
Normal wound 1 hour
Hayfever 3 hours
Moderate fever 6 hours
Minor illness 9 hours
Weak poison 12 hours
Deep wound 18 hours
Small bone fracture 1 day
Moderate illness 3 days
Major fever 7 days
Moderate allergy 10 days
Moderate poison 1 fortnight
Moderate bone fracture 3 weeks
Mortal wound 1 month
Influenza 3 months

Missing limb 9 months
Missing minor organ 1 year
Major illness 18 months
Anaphylactic shock 2 years
Heart attack 3 years
Missing major organ 4 years
Critical wound 5 years
Cancer 6 years

Fualas can restore lost years by finding other things to pay to the fey, such as money, magic, or other abstract characteristics of themselves. Some can even decide not to heal someone and devote the soul of the dead to the fey to restore years.

Rudentist

The Green Grith does not operate clinics, but they do have healers among them, those that wield the element of life itself, transfering lifeforce via magical ropes from themselves or others into the sick and wounded. They are usually street medics.

Rudentists use the arts of vitalism, a magic that taps into the elemental energy of life, to heal others. This art is illegal in Endruin, seen as a threat to the powers that be. Because of this, full training in it is unavailable, and rudentists use a weaker version than a full vitalist might use. They specialize in emergency medicine and the illnesses caused by the pollution in the area.

In order to use a rope to transfer healing, it must be corded and knotted, such that it has three strands and three knots per foot. One must wrap the rope around the target. Rudentists can do this gently, or they can use a lasso or lariat to grab targets who are in a place that is difficult to get to otherwise. Others use them to grab wounded and scared animals. Once the rope is wrapped around the target at least once, another knot must be placed. The rope must also be wrapped around the hands (or equivalent) of the rudentist. It works best when the rope is near the injury, infection, etc. or around the chest so it touches the heart. The vitalist will transfer their own lifeforce into the target in order to create one of several healing effects.

To transfer ashar from oneself to another requires special training. One must be attuned to their inner lifeforce, their qi, their spark, their ashar. This requires meditation, attunement via use of special herbs, drinks, and chants, exercises, and diet. It takes decades to completely master, and most rudentists only have a few years or even months to properly train. Thus, they are far weaker than their counterparts. Once someone is atuned to their inner lifeforce, they must prove themselves devoted to prolonging and supporting life - any use of lifeforce to harm others will weaken their healing abilities.

One must be careful when transferring lifeforce. Every person has a specific amount at any given time that, if lost, will mean they die, sicken, or weaken. If they are healthy, they will usually recover their lifeforce unless it is drained completely or corrupted somehow, but temporarily, they will be weak. A little bit of lifeforce goes a long way.

It is possible to transfer from one target to another target rather than from the rudentist to their target. The one giving lifeforce to another is called a "giver." The other is the target. A consensual giver is preferred for ethical and practical reasons, but also because it will be a violation of the magic, weakening the rudentist. Every living thing inherently wants to live on a subconscious level; they have self-preservation instincts. Lifeforce will resist transferrence, and therefore, can be difficult even to transfer from the rudentist to another. When transferring from a giver to a target, the rudentist must concentrate deeply, and it helps if the giver is aware of their own lifeforce as well. The rope must be wrapped around both giver and target and in the hands of the rudentist. Rudentists cannot transfer from non-conscious beings because of the requirement for consent.

Physical wounds, illnesses, pains, and so on can be healed through transferrence. Physical damage to a body is relatively easy to address. Trauma and mental illness can be treated somewhat, but only the physical aspects can be addressed. This will often reduce symptoms, especially in trauma victims, but not entirely cure it. The more complex something is, the harder it is to heal.

Revitalization is the act of bringing someone back from the brink of death. From being mostly dead. A mortal wound, a disease in its final stages, etc. It is very difficult to do, and complete recovery is even more difficult. But it is possible.

Rudentists are trained by the Green Grith, and their focus on emergency medicine and pollutant-borne illnesses means they sometimes have difficulty with other kinds of wound or illness. The chart below is just a set of examples.

Staterist

The healers of the Red Grith use the medicine of humors to magically heal their clients. They are called staterists. They mostly treat only members of the Red Grith, unless someone pays extra.

Staterists heal people using the theory of the humors of the body. This unscientific and mystical process is, of course, bullshit, but there is body magic that makes it work somewhat. They recognize many humors and their importance:
  • Amniotic: the waters of life and protection of the unborn. Keeping it healthy is crucial. In imbalance, it causes miscarriages. A healthy uterus keeps it balanced.
  • Black bile: black bile is any organ fluid that is not other fluids listed. It is correlated to melancholic disposition. It is said to cause depression, cancer, and senescence if it exists in excess. A healthy spleen keeps it from increasing to excess.
  • Blood: blood is correlated to a sanguine disposition. It is the most powerful of all the humors and can be studied to know the full balance of all humors in a body. It is the source of life within a person. A healthy heart keeps it balanced.
  • Lymph: lymph is correlated to a compassionate disposition. It is said to be responsible for healing within the body and for bodily growth. Too much, however, causes heart and lung issues. Healthy lymph nodes keep it balanced.
  • Milk: milk is correlated to a maternal disposition. It is nourishment and strength. Healthy mammary glands keep it balanced. Too much milk in the system causes anxiety, back pains, and osteoporosis.
  • Oestrus: menstrual blood is correlated to a minerval disposition. It is said that an excess of it causes every problem "women" usually have, but it is also considered a self-balancing fluid. Healthy ovaries keep it balanced.
  • Phlegm: phlegm includes any kind of mucus or pus in the body. It is correlated to a phlegmatic disposition. It is said to cause tumours, chlorosis, rheumatism, and cacochymia. A healthy brain keeps it from increasing to excess.
  • Semen: semen is correlated to an agrandized disposition. If in excess, it causes strokes, heart attacks, and blindness. It must be purged regularly. Healthy genitalia keep it balanced.
  • Tears (lachryma): tears are correlated to a hysterical disposition. If in excess, they cause headaches, confusion, and paranoia. Healthy lungs keep it balanced.
  • Urine: urine is correlated to a sour disposition. If in excess, it causes digestional problems. It must be purged regularly. Healthy kidneys keep it balanced.
  • Yellow bile: yellow bile is actual bile, the yellowish fluid found or associated with the liver and gallbladder. It is correlated to a choleric disposition. It is said to cause increased anger, irrational behavior, cirrhosis, and jaundice. A healthy liver or gallbladder keeps it under control.
Different foods, exercises, and other practices help to keep fluids balanced, and staterists know what to recommend to their patients. They also know how to encourage blood and lymph to heal sicknesses or wounds, keeping medicines for this purposes always on their person. Their magic is generally long-term, slow, and an absurdly pseudoscientific version of medicine, they have access to quicker magicks such as special herbs, roots, and potions that speed recovery from injuries.
