Unless otherwise noted, all Toves are human and death faithful. About one-quarter of family members are Talents (of these, one-quarter are Mediums).

The original "family business" was specialty assassination. Contracts too difficult or dangerous for Assassin's Guild generalists were often brought, through church-operated channels, to Tove Manor. When the family was "in business", family members were divided into "eyes" and "hands". The hands (such as Victor, Gregor, or Lucia) performed the actual executions, and the eyes (particularly Anton, Bianca, and Tabitha) carried out essential research and other support activities to make sure that the hands stayed alive, and their marks became dead. The hands became highly specialized due to the extreme demands of their trade, for example, Victor developed 17 different ways to conceal dragonsbane on his body (including incorporating it into his diet), knew 6 different compounds to mask its scent, and was trained to identify instantly and strike with perfect accuracy 22 different categories of dragonic weak spot, yet he only killed 13 dragons in his entire career before retiring. The eyes, by contrast, were less specialized, and instead focused on different magical arts or covert methods. Since Lucas was exempt from the family business after breaking the family curse, it collapsed with First Shem.
