Backstory:
Tomas was chosen in boyhood to be a knight for the kingdom of Dhun. Born a younger son in a noble family, he was sent to the Duke's court to serve as a page at the age of 7. By the time he was 12, he graduated to squiring for Sir Edward Devon, and by 18, he was anointed a Paladin of the Swanmother. At 20, he was given his official charge and duties, and after 4 years of active service, he distinguished himself well enough that Duke Devon gave him permission to marry his youngest daughter, Lady Harriett Devon.

After 3 years of marriage, however, Tomas found he could no longer tolerate being married to her. He declared his intent to leave her, despite the disgrace, and sent her back to the Duke. He packed what belongings he thought he would need, and he set out into the world to work as a hedge knight.
