Description Tolvajfolgok appear to be female-assigned human-like beings that stand about 5'7" tall. They have short, badger-like tails; sharp claws; and a third eye in their foreheads. Their skin has a slight green undertone, and they tend to have dark brown hair.
Procreation Tolvajfolgok reproduce with metahumans, spirit folk, insinsi, and some inmortal nations to produce more tolvajfolgok.
Esoterica Tolvajfolgok are beings of lhair, b'qar, and ancestral memory. They are also skilled users of nzwara murazvo, blood energy, d'qiarsea, spirit energy, mystery, true shadow, tyvka vlast, kakraohy, mansam, menab'e, kor, mijjit, banaru, gemtkhereg, euergasia, hvittdogg, gebvel, prasinofos, hasken fure, humors, lahab al'qalb, euphotonia, bailaohu jinghua, hegnh, curacion, ujjval aatma, and momentum.
Special Powers Tolvajfolgok can take the form of their predator animal symbol if they drink the blood of the same.
Hunting Powers All tolvajfolgok can sense their prey with their third eye, seeing movement, heat, and fear. They also have a sharper sense of mundane sight, and while they are hunting (for at least an hour), they have a major bonus to endurance. If they stand still for half an hour, they will fade mostly from vision.
Weaknesses Fusei can harm them.
Culture

Thousands of years ago, a few tribes of the noverek were enslaved by the jarorok tribes. Most were dragged along north as the jarorok were driven out, but some managed to escape and form new tribes, tribes built out of the remnants of lost tribes. Motivated to never seen another experience the injustices of slavery and oppression as they had done, they became the tolvajfolgok. The tribes they formed are the Vörös Vércse (Jesendabusenese (Eurasian) Kestrel), Tyúkhús (Hen Harrier), Napvidéki Pacsirta (Eastern Mahadi [Levant] Sparrowhawk), Kis Bagoly (Little Owl), and Cztyeppei Sas (Steppe Eagle).

Each tribe is led by a council of three, elected by the adult members of the tribe. These elders are called családanya, and they act as judges, leaders, and generals when called for. The roles in the tribe are split between keresők (sing. kereső), who are the marshals; vadászok (sing. vadász), the hunters; útmutatók (sing. útmutató), who guide and raise the children; készítők (sing. készítő), those who work and make things; görgők (sing. görgő), those who use esoterica; papnők (sing. papnő), priestesses; and the rövidáru, who are all the other members of the tribe. Socially, the keresok are more popular and well respected, but politically and legally, all are equal.

The keresok have the job of enforcing the laws of the tribe (not of the country they are in), and thus, they are sworn to justice. They kill slavers on sight, free enslaved people if they can, solve crimes within the tribe, and hunt any fugitives. Most keresok come from a long line of keresok, dating back to the original freedom fighters who liberated the tribes in the first place. Vadaszok hunt animals and keep the tribe fed, and they are seen as important to the tribe. But they are not symbols of liberation from slavery, and thus, they are sometimes seen as those who could not make it as keresok. This is generally not true, but the view persists, unfortunately.

Tolvajfolgo children are raised by the utmutatok until they are old enough to start learning to hunt, at which time they are taken in by a vadasz. The vadaszok teach chilren the basics of hunting for three years, and then they are sent to a kerszito to learn crafting and other basic tasks for three years. At this point, they are old enough to start deciding what they want to be. Most do try out to be a kereso, but only a handful are ever taken on. Most end up being utmutato, keszito, or rovidaru, with only a handful being taken as gorgok or papnok. Each different role has their own form of coming-of-age rite:

  • Kereso: a solo hunt for the tribe's symbol bird.
  • Vadasz: a solo hunt for a prey animal.
  • Utmutato: the making of a quilt.
  • Keszito: the making of a craft of their choosing.
  • Gorgo: the use of their primary esoteric art to create something notable.
  • Papno: a solo meditation/vision in the deep forest.
  • Rovidaru: a solo meditation in the deep forest.

At the end of each of these, the tolvajfolgo takes on a new name based on the animal they saw, caught, killed, or otherwise interacted with. For utmutatok, this is the animal they designed into the quilt based on what the priestesses told them to make. For the keszitok, similarly this is based on the animal they were inspired to craft by based on what the priestesses told them to make. For the gorgok, their esoteric art will involve an animal, inevitably, and for the rovidaru, it is based on the animal they saw in the night. Papnok see animals in their visions. As the keresok only have a single animal to choose from, they all have the tribe's animal as a name. They are differentiated in speech by nicknames given them by their fellow keresok after they have been a kereso for a while. Nicknames can be almost anything, but they will usually be silly.

The tolvajfolgok live in forests on the northern end of Idangar, away from the typical territories of the noverek and other nover nations. They respect the borders of the territories of each other's tribes, and they have complex but strong relations to the other tolvajfolgo tribes.

When a serious crime (murder, rape, kidnapping, etc.) is committed by a person in the tribe, as rare as it is, the person usually turns themself in. But if they do not, the keresok find them. If they run away and are not found, they are banished and will be killed if they return. If they are not found out, they are still banished, and if they are ever found out, they will face execution if they do not willingly leave. If they turn themself in, they are judged by the csaladanya and sentenced to some kind of service or labor, stripped of their role, and forced to make amends within seven years. If they fail to do so, they are banished. Repeat offenders of minor crimes are often banished as well, though this is extremely rare.

More commonly, the keresok hunt down slavers. Slavers of other nations often raid the areas near where they live (which is why they choose these territories), and thus, they are often out seeking slaving parties. When they catch a slaver, they bring them back to the tribe to be judged by the csaladanya. Every one brought before the csaladanya has an advocate, usually a padno who takes her vow seriously unless some other suitable advocate is chosen by the accused. Slavers are sentenced to punishments that seek to rehabilitate them; those who refuse or try to escape are executed by the keresok. Any enslaved the keresok find are freed. If they are in need of protection, they are brought back to the tribe for protection. It is from among the rehabilitated slavers and protectees that mates for the tolvajfolgok are usually found. If a protectee or rehabilitated slaver chooses to remain with the tribe, they go through an initiation and are sworn to follow the tribe's laws, and they are required to go through the right ceremonies to become a member of one of the tribal roles. However, they are not expected to have the same powers or visions. They keep their old names if they prefer. Most end up taking new names to symbolize their new life, however, and to fit in. It is very rare that an outsider becomes a kereso, gorgo, papno, or vadasz, but it has happened a few times. If they pass the initiations and rituals, they are considered a full member of the tribe and can vote.

Every year, all of the tribes gather at a place known as Vérszikla, the place where they freed themselves from enslavement thousands of years ago. They go through seven days of ceremonies. On the first day, they recount their histories. On the second day, they sing solemn songs of the dead. On the third day, they perform the ceremony of binding, wherein the csaladanya of each tribe bind their arms together for a ritual dance. On the fourth day, they fast and meditate. On the fifth day, they take to their animal forms and perform a sky dance. On the sixth day, they feast from sun up to sundown. And on the seventh day, they perform a drama symbolizing the founding of the tribes. As this is happening, a massive trading market is taking place; courtships occur; exchanges of information happen; and political agreements are made. About once every 20 years, their gathering is raided by slavers or Idangarian police forces who wish to break it up. This never ends well for the raiders.

Tolvajfolgo music and art tends to be colorful, bright, and large. Murals, mosaics, quilts, symphonies, etc. are their preferred media.

Prey Though they still have hunters in their tribes who bond to prey animals (see nover for the names), the primary cultural prey of the tolvajfolgok are slavers and others who have violated their tribal laws.
Sisterhood As children of Shefere, tolvajfolgok have a kinship with al'ulkhua and valkyries that makes them instantly recognizable to one another. They also have deep cultural ties and respect for one another. They respect them and honor them so long as they do not engage in unjust practices.
Religion

Tolvajfolgok worship Nagy Vadásznő, Shefere, the Goddess, and Igazlelkű. Nagy Vadaszno is the ancient huntress, and Igazlelku is the ancient kereso. The Goddess is the mother, and Shefere is the maiden. Religious work is done by the papnok, who train for seven years before they are allowed to be considered full-flegded papno, no matter what age they start. A tolvajfolgo may decide to become a papno at any time of their life, and they will be accepted into the sisterhood. If they never pass the final test (meditation and visions in the deep forest over night), they can remain an acolyte their whole life. Once a person is accepted into the sisterhood, they may leave at any time as well. The goddesses have a purpose for all, and it is not the place of a papno to question.

The main functions of the papnok in the tribe are to lead rituals such as the coming-of-age rituals, providing guidance as to the animals that are calling a person; advocating for criminals on trial; recording the histories of the tribe; and making offerings to the goddesses. These offerings happen only under triple full moons, and thus are not frequent. Offerings take the form of works of art or craft made from the chains stolen from slavers. In day to day life, papnok are seen as counselors and advisers, and many seek them out to discuss difficult questions or make hard decisions. Even the csaladanya seek them out.

Gender

All tolvajfolgok are assigned female at bith. Any deviation from this, however, is encouraged and allowed to flourish. Every tolvajfolgo chooses their gender when they come of age. If they decide to change it, they seek out the papnok for advice and guidance, and then have it declared by the csaladanya so that the whole tribe is informed. This is considered a celebratory event, and as such, it is taken very seriously by everyone.

Marriage does not exist in their tribes, but they have deep, serious relationships. Non-monogamy is common. Most romantic relationships are between one another, while sexual relationships can be between them and anyone they can physically have sex with, so long as it is consensual. Reproduction is seen as a personal choice that has nothing to do with one's romantic partners, as the raising of children will be done by the utmatatok. Children are always welcomed, even in the hardest of times. Abortion, however, is not uncommon or frowned upon.

Military The keresok are considered the military of the tribes.
Other Nations The tolvajfolgok respect the other noverek nations, except the jarorok, whom they hate with a passion (though they do believe redemption is possible).
Outside View The Idangarian ruling class hates the tolvajfolgok because they do not always recognize Idangarian law. They seek often to drive them out or exterminate them, but the tolvajfolgok are extremely resilient and fierce as a culture; they are warriors and do not die easily.
