The nuelthex absorb silence. In order to survive, they must avoid loud areas, attracting silence with their bone-mane (called a conductive plate). If they are completely charged, they are able to manipulate silence instead of absorbing it. Female nuelthex have the ability to see sound if they close their eyes. Male nuelthex have in childhood the ability to speak without sound. They lose this ability in adolescence, but gain the ability to move silently once they are grown. The nuelthex are immune to being muted.

The nuelthex live in very out of the way places, often violently fending off outsiders. Their women are lookouts for incoming noise-makers, and their children are their main messengers. The adult men are the ones that defend their villages. They harvest silence, manipulating it into strange patterns that create meals for them.
