| Description | The malthex stand about seven feet tall. They have moss-like black fur all over their bodies, with clawed hands and feet, beady red eyes, and a yellow, bony ridge that runs from their foreheads to their middle backs, like a mane of bone. Their snouts are vaguely alligatorlike, and their fangs are usually dirty yellow. The females have white stripes of fur running from their eyes to their ears. |
| Procreation | With each other. Follows the mother with other thex. |
| Magic | One in a million have soul magic, one in five million have soul magic. Mind and body magic are possible, as is void. Faith is not uncommon. |
| Special Powers | The malthex absorb hellfire. In order to survive, they must patrol the Hells, attracting hellfire with their bone-mane (called a conductive plate). If they are completely charged, they are able to grab hellfire instead of absorbing it. Female malthex have the ability to see sins if they close their eyes. Male malthex have in childhood the ability to speak to demons. They lose this ability in adolescence, but gain the ability to planewalk once they are grown. The malthex are immune to soul damage. |
| Weaknesses | The malthex die without damnable sustenance, and they are susceptible to holy assaults. |
| Culture | The malthex are one of the only non-demonic denizens of the Hells. They live in scavenging groups, hunting for untended souls caught in hellfire. Their role in the Hells is almost janitorial, and the demons usually leave them be. They have no souls, but instead restore their metaphysical presences with the hellfire they devour. The children are generally taken care of, but they will be cast off as bait to an attacking demon because they can communicate with it. The women guide the group toward particularly damned souls, and the men travel to other planes to lure in bait. |
