The kurthex absorb electricity. In order to survive, they must follow storms, attracting lightning with their bone-mane (called a conductive plate). If they are completely charged, they are able to grab lightning instead of absorbing it. Female kurthex have the ability to see weather patterns if they close their eyes. Male kurthex have in childhood the ability to speak to storms. They lose this ability in adolescence, but gain the ability to cloudwalk once they are grown. The kurthex are immune to electrical damage.

The kurthex are nomadic. Their tribes travel through various storm-ridden regions, following major storms until they die out, and serving the Powers (their name for the Father of Weather). The children are revered for their ability to speak to living storms, and their role in the tribe is to offer thanks. The women's role is to predict the next storm and guide the tribe. The men's role is to enter the storms and bring down the lightning.
