The Code is an ancient, fundamental set of rules that is empowered by
Justice. It is basic, retributional, and powerful. It is most easily summed up with "an eye for an eye," though there are more nuanced parts to it, depending on situation.
One may invoke the Code in one of four ways:
- Curses: if one suffers an injustice and reacts in a timely fashion, one may invoke a curse upon someone, rewriting their True Name in the process. This is the Code interacting with nommos.
- Vengeance: if one suffers an injustice and seeks out the perpetrator, then brings their own justice, one has invoked the Code in their vengeance. This is an impure invocation of the Code, though, for it causes more injustice to be created. However, the avenger will generally be strengthened temporarily in their quest if they are aware of the Code and consciously pull from it for strength.
- The Staff: those seeking justice may go to the group known as the Staves of Justice, who are empowered by the Gift wielded by their founder. These justicars have an imbued connection to the code that gives them special powers: a greater skill at reading people, an imperviousness to curses, insights into local laws, and the power to invoke Justice upon their targets once a year, through their staves.
- Legal empowerment: a reasonably Just nation may imbue an elite force of their law enforcement with the Code's power, giving them one supernatural power appropriate to that nation in the process. This is very rare, and the only nations to regularly utilize this are Kerupen, Ispilopolis, Tara'hin (the famed Tara'hinian Code), and Lohar.
