| Description | Tenebreans are human-like beings with skin as pale as whitest snow. Their eyes are colorless orbs with no iris or pupil. They are hairless. Culturally, they wear no clothing at all. |
| Procreation | Tenebreans reproduce as humans do, with each other, with other dongxue, or with other human nations. Outside their own nation, the offspring follow the mother biologically. Outside of their species, it's only possible with supernatural intervention. |
| Esoterica | Tenebreans are beings of emotional resonance, shadow, and earthpower. They use these arts and all others, save for lhair, euphotonia, heavenly light, or brown aether. They are very skilled at mystical arts. |
| Special Powers | A tenebrean can manipulate stone and metal that has not touched light in a week. They can reshape it into almost anything. Cold does not affect them. Once they reach maturity, they gain a shadow-based power unique to them. They can defy gravity at will while underground. Above ground, if they cloak themselves well enough, they can survive. In the light, they can manipulate shadow itself. They cannot safely use the shadows beneath their cloaking, for it would expose them to light. Other shadows they can command and wield as powerful weapons, tools, or protection against the light. |
| Senses | Tenebreans have no vision. They can sense where they are underground, use echolocation, and have incredible hearing. |
| Skin | The skin of a tenebrean is palest white and extremely photosensitive. Even the littlest bit of light burns them. In darkness, they thrive, and their skin is impenetrable by any weapon. |
| Breath Power | Tenebreans breathe cold air so frigid it would freeze the lungs of normal mortals. This air is filled with spores from the fungi they eat. Their lungs process this and turn it into a spray that makes non-tenebreans hallucinate, if they choose to breathe out this spray. Their normal breath is so cold, it can cause mild harm to non-tenebreans. |
| Weaknesses | Light hurts them. They are susceptible to heat. |
| National Culture | In a lightless cavern deep under the surface, tenebreans dwell. They live where no one can find them, far from the rest of the world, in marvelous cities that no one has ever seen. They have no respect for gravity and little for physics in general. Their cities defy possibility and imagination, using every esoteric art at their disposal. Without vision, they have no need of obeying any aesthetic rules outside of something tactile or auditory. They build for echoes. Every city is malleable, changed by the whims of those who live there. The leaders of any tenebrean city are called atereans. The atereans are responsible for mediating conflicts, coordinating tasks for the community, and leading defense if they are ever attacked, though in the history of their civilization, they never have been. Children are raised by the whole community. They are taught from a young age how to shape the metal and stone around them and to use various esoteric arts. When they are ready, they can choose to study only one specific art or skill, or they can take up multiple arts, which is more common. By the time they have enough skill, they are adults and can become independent. They usually continue study for a long time after. They usually have mastered at least one esoteric art before midlife. Gender is complex and fluid among them, and courtship rituals involve use of esoteric arts to show one's love and affection. Marriage is unknown, but there are some commitment ceremonies. Relationships are fluid as well, however. The use of shadow most, and they use it well. It is the center of their culture. They exist in the dark, and therefore, they are one with it. They use shadow in art, in entertainment, and in competitions. They keep no accounting of time, but every so often they gather to celebrate, compete, and share their arts. The use of other esoteric arts to supplement this is not uncommon, but the most revered are purely shadow. |
| Religion | They worship the Dark, which they believe breathed them into being and gave them the powers over the lightless realm. They honor the dark through arts: communal dancing, singing, and performance. Some tenebreans choose to focus entirely on the worship of the Dark, becoming loquentia, who serve as priests or shamans. |
| Outside View | Tenebreans are completely unknown outside their own culture. The rare tenebrean who leaves rarely speaks of what they are. |
