Unaligned Enlighteners

Those who wield unaligned magic to learn, teach, or gather information.

Arithmagician

Type: Mathematician

Artihmagicians use math for magical purposes. Unlike numerologers, they do not wield them via alphanumerics. They wield them via pure mathemagical theory, using magical equations to target different stats, substats, abilities, powers, skills, lores, languages, or items on a target.

In order to learn arithmagic, one must learn it in a university or other school or find a mentor to teach it. It takes decades of study to properly wield, and most cannot afford the schooling or have the mental focus to do so.

Those who do must also acquire special materials: parchment arithmagically designed to be exactly .05 ounces, quill pens clipped to a perfect weight of .1 ounces, ink that is exactly .5 oz. on the quill tip, and so on. These must never measure more than 1 oz. per use or they take penalties. The other major item they need is a monocle of exactly .5 oz. that is designed by another artihmagician to be able to see and calculate people. Eventually, once they are their own master arithmagician, they can make their own lens, but they always start with one made by someone else. This lens, called a vleponic lens, allows them to see the numbers on people's character sheets. They roll AWA against the score they are rolling to see. If they do not know what the skill, ability, power, lore, language, or item is, they cannot roll to see its properties. Everyone has the same stats and implied substats, so they can always roll for those. If they have previously altered or seen a score, they do not need to roll to see it. If a score has changed and they do not know it, the difficulty will be based on the actual score, even as they calculate to the wrong score.

Once they know a score, then they can perform their magical calculations. These must include the weight of the materials they are using, including parchment, quill, and ink (which they divide their score by). The lens' weight is a subtraction from their arithmagic score. They then choose a divider or subtractor from the target score they wish to inflict. The difficulty will be the score plus the subtractor or times the divider vs. their arithmagic score, plus the number of rounds they wish it to last. If they succeed their roll, the subtractor or divider is applied to the score on the target for as many rounds as they indicated. They can also do this to add to multiply stats of themselves or allies, but these are still used to raise the difficulty, not lower it (i.e., the additor or multiplier is till added or multiplied on the difficulty).

If the roll is a special success, they may choose to add 3 to the penalty or bonus or to add two more rounds of effect; if it is exceptional, they may choose to add 6 to penalty or bonus or add four more rounds of effect; if it is critical, it automatically adds 6 to the penalty or bonus and four more rounds of effect.

If they reduce STR or WIL to 0, the target might die.

Hyperscientist

Type: Scientist

Those who experiment with the energy of possibility using special glass beakers and other materials to create magical experiments. Using possibility is very difficult, though the methods seem simple, as the potíri required to use it is very fragile, rare, and expensive. To wield possibility, one must use the correct materials and engage it, invoke it, through strict adherence to the scientific method: questioning, hypothesizing, experimenting, analyzing, and concluding, often in repetition.

  • Question: a hyperscientist of any scientific discipline must first draw obsevations and being to question how things work. Once they are aware of (at least) two competing possibilities, they are able to engage the energy.
  • Hypothesis: they must then propose two hypotheses that cannot coexist. In this, they must not simply think it, but invoke the hypotheses through written or recorded methods.
  • Experiment: the experiment is the key to wielding possibility. Once they have their hypotheses, they must gather appropriate materials for the experiment. If the experiment does not require glassware, they must find a way to incorporate it, even if it is as simple as using lenses to observe or a pen to jot down notes. The glassware (see below) channels the possibility that has formed in the mind of the hyperscientist and been invoked through recorded hypotheses. The experiment must have an outlet for the hyperscientist to draw from their mind the energy of possibility. This involves a direct connect to the mind, often through the eyes, as a lens made of potíri is the easiest method. Once the energy is drawn out (appearing as a green spark), it must be captured in potíri glassware. Once it is captured, it can be drawn out via tubing or by applying heat or electricity to it. With enough of it, it can be used to multiply the experiment at hand in order to test multiple hypotheses at once, running them simultaneaously in separate facets of reality.
  • Analyze: analysis of the various results can be done mundanely, or, if there is enough possibility left, it may be applied to the results via special lenses to aide in gauging multiple results at once.
  • Conclusion: any conclusion made will close the loop on the possibility engaged to experiment with, and any surplus possibility generated through the experiment will be stored in the glass used. If used for a related experiment, it will be even more potent.

Hyperscientists' abilities vary by field of science. Consult the GM.

Irritologer

Type: Scientist

An irritologer is a scientist of negation and the void, the vast emptiness of all existence. They are wielders of a power that negates other powers, and it can only be wielded via science and technology.

Irritologers study their sciences at universities or schools or from mentors. Irritology is a very alien and strange science, one that defies laws of physics and chemistry, and therefore, studying it takes a long time to be able to wield it properly. To wield it, one must also acquire various materials that are rich with void energy, but these are very rare outside of the White Moon.

To wield the power of the void, the irritologer must sacrifice parts of themselves, usually their body. They infuse themselves with void, negating parts of their muscle, blood, bone, flesh, or organs, turning themselves into mechanical in some parts if they must in order to convert body into negative energy. If they choose to do this to their emotions, this can also work, altering their personalities permanently. If they alter their minds or souls, it will weaken their ability to wield the void.

As scientists, they experiment with void to learn its properties, using various materials that are powerful with it. They use some standard objects in their pursuit of understanding it:
  • Null-scalpel: a supersharp scalpel, usually made from zantastanax.
  • Null-beam: a beam produced by an irritolaser machine that negates other energies and materials.
  • Negalens microscope: a lens that allows them to see void within something.
  • Irritoslide: a glass slide that can contain void energy.
Materials include the following:
  • Myzoiq lizardskin: void-rich lizard skin.
  • Nozuktun: void-rich stone that has no color.
  • Null moss: void-rich moss.
  • Opoxy: a fruit that converts energies into void.
  • Ototsiqi skin: void-rich snakeskin.
  • Pellucid fluid: void-rich water that is completely colorless.
  • Pellucid tulip nectar or petals: void-rich nectar or petals from the colorless pellucid tulip.
  • Pellucid wool: void-rich wool from iqixiquon goats.
  • Ro'tuuriq fur: void-rich bear fur.
  • Vewelian wood: void-rich wood that grows underground.
  • Void berry or void berry wood: void-rich berries or wood from a void berry tree.
  • Void mantis chitin: void-rich chitin.
  • Void salamanderskin: void-rich salamander skin.
  • Wood of nothing: wood from the tree of nothings.
  • Zantastanax: void-rich plutonium.
They can use materials from all of these to make chemicals or machines to direct void in different ways:
  • Negate energy: void's base state is to negate other esoteric energies.
  • Null specific matter: altering void to target a specific kind of matter (gas, liquid, solid, plasma) or even more specific kind (stone, metal, fabric, water, iron, cheese, whatever is specified).
  • Null body: altering void to only target living bodies.
  • Null mind: altering void to nullify the mind of a thinking target.
  • Null heart: altering void to nullify the emotions of a feeling target.
  • Null soul: altering void to nullify the soul of a target.
  • Null life: altering void to nullify the lifeforce of a target.
  • Null Name: altering void to nullify the True Name of a target.
Anything may be specified. Consult the GM.

Metalogician

Type: Teacher

A metalogician is a logician who uses the power of the mind, specifically the parts of rationality and logic, to analyze, research, learn, advise, and teach. To do this, they must alter their own being and cull parts of their minds, hearts, bodies, and souls to focus on the most cold, logical parts of themselves.

Metalogicians are taught in special schools where they are taught the philosophy and theory of hyperlogic, the magical psionic science that gives them their powers. After decades of study, they are given the choice - engage in the rituals that will give them their magical powers, or go into another field of study. Those few who choose to do this must then pass the following ritual tests:

  • Test of Pain: this test requires they learn to ignore pain and think clearly in spite of it. The rituals vary by school, but the end result is always that the metalogician has a nail inserted in their chest permanently.

  • Test of Whelm: this test requires they learn to ignore intense emotion and think clearly in spite of it. The rituals vary by school, but the end result is always that the metalogician has a locket with a reminder of something intensely emotional.

  • Test of Memory: this test requires they learn to erase memories in favor of expanding their logical capacity. This hones the brain to be a machine of logic, keeping few memories that do not fuel the tools of logic and rationality.

  • Test of Consciousness: this test requires they learn to shape their conscious thinking to filter out anything but their current focus, taking in only relevant information.

  • Test of Dreaming: this test requires that they learn to reshape dreams and subconscious aspects of their mind to work only on their logical processes and not on dreams, imagination, or unnecessary processes.

  • Test of Metaphysics: this test requires that they sacrifice aspects of their soul such that it is reconfigured to only amplify and fuel their logical consciousness, absorption of factual data, and relevant skills and abilities.

If these are all passed, the metalogician gains some or all of the following powers:

  • Rational response: they are immune to normal or special stun because pain is merely information from the body. Exceptional stun is stun condition for one round, then unconsciousness the next.

  • Internal observation: any attempted emotional effect on the metalogician suffers a -6 penalty because emotions are to be observed and not acted upon.

  • Organized recollection: all factual data they learn is organized within their minds in a way that makes it easier to recollect. This is rolled in place of memory rolls for factual information, making it much easier to remember things.

  • Clarified observation: any perception rolls gain +6 when they are taking in factual data, but they have -6 to read people rolls, persuasion, and deception.

  • Subconscious sorting: they can passively attempt to solve a puzzle or mystery, put together information, or review studied material, allowing them to roll AWA for understanding, logical conclusions, or analyzing something while also performing other actions at the same time.

  • Telepathic communication: they can communicate mind-to-mind. This power replaces one innate power they were born with due to their species.

  • Factual scanning: they can use their psionic powers to scan an area 30’ in radius around them to identify all people or things present within it. This power replaces one innate power they were born with due to their species.

  • Informative connection: they can mindlink with someone and psionically deliver factual data to them rapidly. This power replaces one innate power they were born with due to their species.

Other powers may be possible. Consult the GM.

Metalogicians are scholars first, advisers second, and teachers third.

Schreyber

Type: Archivist

A scholar who studies the status quo and the energy state that exists there, using it to preserve documents and other materials. They do this by using positional magic to let the energy flow around them and maintain the status quo they study.

All esoteric energies flow. They are generated, then move through available conduits, creating often invisible flows, some of which are massive and spread around the world. A shreyber learns to sense the flow of these energies and use their own position and the positions of special objects to neutralize aligned energies, amplify unaligned energies, and create a status quo of energy within a space. With that, within that, they find the neutralizing energy, which they wield to control the space.

All esoteric energies come in five categories: elemental, celestial, fey, infernal, or unaligned. Neutralizing energy is an energy defined by its unalignment. When wielded, it forces the other energies present to repulse if they are aligned, while strengthening any unaligned powers. Shreybers use their power to adjust the energies around them, creating places of power.

To be a shreyber, one must reject all aligned powers within oneself. As a living thing, a person always has elemental lifeforce, and to completely reject it would mean death. But a shreyber finds ways to dampen it when using their powers. Similar situations exist with beings who have other powers inherently. The methods used to reduce or reject aligned powers within oneself vary by species, culture, and time period, but they always involve a meditative practice and having their bodies in specific positions. If they ever use an aligned energy or even use an object with significant amounts of that energy in it, they must go through ritual cleansing of some kind.

There are four formations:

  • That which amplifies unaligned powers

  • That which neutralizes elemental powers

  • That which neutralizes popular powers

  • That which neutralizes imperial powers

The four formations may be done via the shape of a structure or through the location of objects. Energies flow toward areas where they aren't, but also to areas where their opposites are if there are conduits for them to travel through. The formations create invisible conduits through space and affect the flow of energies by capturing them in spots where they cannot escape, then letting them fade in these sealed areas.

Using the formations, a shreyber draws neutralizing energy (which is an oppositional energy to all aligned energies) to their altbukh, an ancient tome used as an anchor of power, by making it unaligned and devoid of as many energies as possible. Once their altbukh becomes a vessel of neutralizing energy, they can then place it within a space that has other energies in it. Their book will draw those other energies (being now opposite them) and thus neutralize them.

They can also use the shape of a structure and its materials to the same effect, but only by knowing the proper conduits for various energies. While there are many materials that serve as conduits for different, specific energies, a shreyber tends to focus on the five broader categories: water for elemental, mirrored glass for celestial essences, gold for infernal essences, feathers for fey energies, and dragonscale for unaligned energies. They need to position the conduits near the energy source, have a method of moving the conduit from one place to another if it is not large enough or shaped properly to connect source to target, and have a target area protected by the right materials to seal the energy once it is captured. The key is, as with all works of the shreyber, to have enough neutralizing energy to neutralize or amplify the right energies, all while forming zones where energies can be stopped.

They use this to preserve massive archives and libraries of objects, keeping damaging energies from them.
