| Esoterica | Sprites are beings of solar aether, summer aether, poioumenon, and dream energy. Like all faeries, they are users of The Tradition, a form of poioumenonic lore empowered by dream energies. They also use winds aether, radiance, ethereal energy, emotional resonance (especially honor), pattern aether, glory, long path, dumaqu, flux, fortune, euphotonia, euphony, rubedian aether, fate, astral aether, flux, complexity, and spirits. |
| The Tradition | Sprites have the following basic fey powers:
Sprites can breathe underwater when they dive into freshwater lakes and rivers. They can fly with their diaphanous wings. They are not purely physical and sometimes become visibly insubstantial if they do not land on the ground frequently enough (about once an hour). In the summer, they can speak to plants and animals. They can change the colors of tree's leaves by singing to them. If they alter an entire forests' leaves, they will effectively change the climate of the area to summery clement. If they are determined, they can sing for hours and hours to change the color of things made from plant-based materials. They can turn themselves into a ball of solar flame very briefly under a full moon, if need be. When threatened, sprites can unleash significant powers to protect themselves: blinding light from a bead of dew, instilling intense hot flashes by whispering in their target's ears, intimidating the dishonorable with words of power, blistering the skin by throwing pollen on their target, and drying out the skin by rubbing a petal on the skin. |
| Glamour | Sprites can glamour themselves using certain ancient rhymes, but their glamours vary by season. In rebirth, they can look like songbirds. In spring, they can look like human children. In Beltane, they can look like massive balls of flame. In summer, they can look like conventionally attractive adult humans. In harvest time, they can look like the leaves of trees. In fall, they can look like unpleasant middle-aged humans. In fallow, they can look like senescent old humans. In winter, they cannot glamour. |
| Weaknesses | If they do not speak their True Name backwards into that same mirror in half a minute, sprites lose their True Names. They have a fortnight to recover it or they become targets of the Wild Hunt, corrupted into another kind of fey, or turn into a hag or boggin. Iron or steel will bind a sprite into powerlessness. An iron horseshoe nailed over a door will bar a sprite from entering a house. Most sprites detest tobacco smoke, and it can be used to stave them off. This is just a preference, however, and not a weakness. Brown msawhat and shadow energy will harm them. Sprites must not go out under a new moon, or they will fade away. |
| National Culture | Sprites once lived in small tribes, usually made up of sprites of similar sizes. These early tribes lived in bliss, playing in the sun and enjoying the world, but invasion and conquest brought to them subjugation, first under the Unseelie, then the Seelie, then later the tuatha, then the Winter Court. Before these conquests and the fallout from them, though, the sprites were happier, kinder beings. The tribes were led by a council of matriarchs; the whole tribe took care of children and raised them. All roles were open to any member of the tribe who wanted to participate. They spent their days enjoying the sun, their nights sleeping carefree. Gender was understood but not enforced. The main focus of the tribes was preparing for their long summers of celebration, festivals, feasting, and joy. The winters were spent gathering food and stores. Every week had a festival in the summer, but the biggest two were the first day of summer and the midsummer festival. On the first day of summer, the celebration brought them out into the fields for sex and feasting. Midsummer saw all sprite tribes coming together for a massive celebration with their Manifest, Mab. Weavers of bright colors, crafters of fine ornaments and jewelry, builders of intricate homes, writers of happy lyrics and rhymes, and makers of beautiful glass objects, the sprites were merry makers of light and joy. Sprites in this time lived in harmony with the flora and fauna of summer; all plants and animals protected them in exchange for warmth and kindness. |
| Summer Culture | The bitter rebellions and wars to escape left them divided and broken for many Ages. The end result was a legacy that left them banding together into larger tribes, then later into bigger communities, towns and cities that they could defend. The sprites were nearly wiped out, and for many Ages, went into hiding and were thought extinct save for a handful under the protection of their powerful May Queen, who was loyal to The Queen. Then, the May Queen politically maneuvered for their independence and built a feudal nation in alliance with the green children, fauns, rakshasas, undines, menehunes, atomies, acalicas, and niskies. Each of these nations swore featly to the May Queen, Mab, and made agreements for protection and tribute. In the Summer Court, the sprites became the ruling class, but only the larger sprites. Smaller ones remained truer to their tribal roots and live out in the fields and by rivers. The ruling class, however, makes up most of the sprite culture at this time. Most sprites are nobles or mystics, and the rest are servants, peasants, or warriors. In the Summer Court, sprite children are raised by their families among the servants, peasants, mystics, and warriors. Nobles have their servants teach them and raise them. All children are then sent to a school at the age of 14 to be taught history, science, math, and reading. They learn for three years. Mystics then go on to the special schools for mystics. Nobles go on to be trained by other nobles in the arts of politics and diplomacy. Warriors go on to be trained as warriors. And peasants and servants go to work. Those who fail to become mystics in their special schools usually become nobles, though some become warriors. Sometimes mystics recruit from the lower classes as well. Warriors fall into several categories once their training is complete: the Mayguard, who are the most elite and protect the May Queen; the knights, who may one day become landowners and become nobles; the soldiers, recruited from the peasant and servant classes; the constabulary, who serve in the towns and cities and come from the lower classes; and the Summerguard, the bulk of the warrior class who come from the warrior class and lead the military. Sprites maintain these classes out of the belief that anything else will expose them to the cruelties of the other Courts once more. |
| Other Courts | Sprites are feared in the Winter Court and killed on sight when possible. The Unseelie enslave them, and the Seelies treat them as rivals and begrudgingly allow them to be part of the ruling class only if they can buy their way into it. The Kindly Court welcomes them with open arms, and the Unkindly Court captures and tortures them when they can. |
