Beliefs:
Xephthar (Church of the Scarred Mother, Harrowers): Misery and agony are weakness leaving the soul and body. A scar is a perfect bit of flesh. A scarred soul is a more perfect soul. Happiness is a lie, an illusion, an impossibility. It is fleeting. Grief is forever, permanent, a friend to be embrace. Wallow in sorrow, for then others will work for you. Weakness is not a weakness, it is the preferred state, for that is when others serve you. Tears are sacred. Creating happiness in others is to lie to them and make them think they are strong, when, like everyone, they are weak. If they believe they are strong, let them do the work for you, but ultimately, they will fail. Do not seek happiness. Do not hope. These are lies, and they will only hurt you more. Embrace your grief and you will never be harmed.
Afterlife:
The Scarred believe that after they die, the best they can hope for is a limbo state where nothing happens save the occasional fall into the Hells--if they are not strong enough. Normally, they are reborn as a lesser being, something weak and horrible, something that will continue to suffer. At worst, if they are not strong enough, they are cast into the fires of Hell for torment. Thus, they must become as strong as possible in life.
