Description At birth, all dragons look like large, pink worms. At maturity, dragons grow to be massive scaled ruby red spheres with huge, gaping mouths that look like an entrance to the Abyss. They have massive legs and arms and a shifting number of tails with either spikes or mauls at the end. Some, however, transform into sleek, slender ruby red draconoid beasts of moderate size with eyes like the Abyss, tails with stingers, bat wings, and ruby-encrusted brows.
Procreation Dragons mate with each other only. Without intense supernatural interference, half-dragons are an impossibility. Dragons lay one to three eggs at a time. Upon hatching, a dragon immediately begins absorbing background energies. All dragon eggs are filled with pure, liquid draconic energy, which sustains the baby dragon upon hatching.
Esoterica Ruby dragons have absorbed massive amounts of entropy. This makes them unstable but gives them a wide variety of powers. They also commonly have flux, infernum, arnum, msawhat, mana, rubedian aether, cosmic aether, currents aether, Damaskian power, rending, fortune, or possibility. Other evil or neutral powers are possible. Divine energies are uncommon. Holy powers and the Law are impossible.
Special Powers

Dragons gain new powers as they accumulate more energies. At each stage of growth, they gain a new ability, usually culminating with the twelfth ability when they accumulate . The usual progression of powers is as follows:

  • Level 1: Entropic blast breath weapon
  • Level 2: Immunity to control
  • Level 3: Immunity to poisons
  • Level 4: Immunity to heat
  • Level 5: Scales allow random teleportation
  • Level 6: Zone of instability
  • Level 7: Random creation, once per year
  • Level 8: Dissolve bonds at will
  • Level 9: Chaos sight
  • Level 10: a completely randomly generated evil power
  • Level 11: Summon Avagenic eyes
  • Level 12: Disrupt reality, 10 mile radius

All dragons accumulate energies by absorbing them naturally from the area around them. As such, they must carefully cultivate their lairs to provide the right kinds of energies, hence they hoard appropriate objects.

Other common powers include random polymorph others/polymorphing gaze, inappropriate alteration, summon giant crabs, summon giant bats, cacophonic wailing, and invisibility at random.

Alternate Forms Ruby dragons have no stable alternate forms, but often randomly take other forms when outside their own domains.
Weaknesses The Law and heghnic energies can destroy them.
Subspecies Avagenian dragons are ruby dragons who have absorbed a higher percentage of entropy than usual. They appear to be a sleek, slender ruby-scaled draconoid beasts. They are intensely intelligent, have all the powers of a ruby dragon, but also have more control. They do not randomly polymorph outside their domains. They can breath in space, move at lightspeed, and can shape the crystals of Avagen. They dwell in beautiful, impossible structures on that world, finding Shem itself to be too orderly to survive.
Culture

Ruby dragons dwell in the Pandemonian sea on small, craggy islands shattered constantly by the violent waves and storms of that region. They lay their eggs on the beaches, where one in a hundred survive to hatch and thrive. Sometimes, they care for their young, but other times, they abandon them.

Because of their chaotic natures, very little consistent culture is identifiable. They have no criteria for choosing mates, prefer structureless relationships, gather hoards through chance and violence, and have a tendency toward dangerous delusions. They are not unintelligent, but they do not adhere to any reasonable standard. They refuse to be predicted.

Sample statistics For all draconic powers, the rule is 1 point in a stat costs 6 points of an energy. Stats cannot be easily predicted.
