Powers

Powers are the innate magical abilities determined by the species of the character. These will usually be mentioned or listed in the species' description, though other powers are always possible. One must be born with the capacity for these powers, but new powers can manifest as the character uses their innate magic. The powers will always match the alignment and theme of the inherent magic of the species of the character, some more specific than others. For example, an undine (a being of elemental water) will only gain powers that involve elemental water, while a demon (a being of raw infernal power) will only gain powers that are infernal.

While a character can gain new powers, they cannot intentionally learn them. They cannot seek them out or study them. They may see another of their species using a different power than what they have and therefore know something is possible, but they cannot learn that power without something unlocking it within themselves, usually either using the powers they have, acquiring more of the magical energy their species is born with, or some story-related moment.

Most powers can be improved by practice and use. Some powers must be actively used, some must be triggered by something, and some may be passive. Some may simply be a substat (such as Flight or Disease Resistance), while others might be separately listed under Powers on the character sheet.

All powers are magical. Anything inherent to a character's species that is mundane is either a skill or substat.

For examples of Powers, refer to the separate Species pages.
