Phobos awoke one day, ten years ago on a road in Hynof. She had no memories of anything that happened prior to that moment, except for a vague feeling that she is some sort of living weapon. She does, however, retain her general information and skills.
She essentially wandered for five years, and developed a deep hatred for mortality, their prejudice, pettiness, cruelty, exploitation, etc. This is, of course, somewhat related to the nature of the magic that she accesses, which make her extremely receptive to the worst of mankind. After five years she wound up working for the Bloodcaster-General, mainly because she needed a job, and also because she'd get to do the kind of work that would appeal to her warped sensibilities.
The larger backstory is that she was taken and experimented upon by a trio of powerful magic users known as "The Weird Sisters" (after the witches from Mac Beth). She was intended to be their doomsday weapon. In the event that a nation would institute a purge of magic users, Phobos would be placed inside it and amplified so that a wave of horror would engulf the entire nation, causing it to tear itself apart. The magical equivalent of a nuclear bomb. But they were never able to exactly figure out how to accomplish this, and so sent Phobos out into the world without any memories.
There is a being on Shem called "Phobia," who is a daughter of the Nightmare Divine. Phobos was empowered by the Weird Sisters, who are unseelie fey, as an attempt to create an equal being to that being, but one they could control. Her purpose was, since she is a weapon of horror, to be used against the seelie fey. The Weird Sisters abandoned their project after several other failed attempts, and Phobos and several other failed attempts were sold to slavers. One of the other projects woke up on the slave ship and destroyed it, setting her "sisters" adrift in the wake of the ship's sinking. Phobos awoke on a coastal road in Hynof (Sweden), and from there began her travels, trying to find out who and what she was.
Eventually, her winged-form lead her to believe she might find answers on the sky continent of Gyrah, which is how she ended up meeting the Bloodcaster-General and getting involved in this plot.
Phobos was originally a young girl who lived in Tarenthal, named Gwawrwen. She was magically sensitive, but not actually trained in any form of magic use. She was abducted when she was 10, and Phobos washed up on the shore of Hynof when she was 20, which makes her 30 in the present.
Gwawrwen still exists within Phobos as a sort of comatose personality that could be revived. They are effectively two personalities in one body (two souls possibly). Now, the thing about this is that people will assume that Gwawrwen is an innocent little girl, but she's actually far more twisted and evil than Phobos is (from what was done to her). If Gwawrwen takes over, she'd be brilliant (possessing an extraordinarily high IQ), completely insane, and a serial killer.
