| Description | Pachydermions appear to be anthropomorphic elephants. They are huge, about 20' tall. They have very thick skins, long trunks, and tusks. One tusk will usually be smaller than the other. They tend to be grey, but their cosmetics make them reddish brown. Some are white. They have pillar-like legs and large pad-feed. Their trunks end in fingerlike protrusions. On Taggarus, they are larger than on Dabusen. Dabusenese are hairier. |
| Procreation | Follows the mother. |
| Magic | One in five million have heart or soul magic. Mind and body magic are possible. Void is possible. Faith is not uncommon. |
| Special Powers | Pachydermions are very strong. They are not good runners or jumpers, but they can get up momentum. They have sharp memories and they are very intelligent. Their trunks are very strong, versatile, and careful. They can be used to inhale water, mud, or other fluids. They can also be used for snorkeling. They use them for almost everything. They also sense vibrations, and they use them for making noises, especially their trumpet call (which can call actual elephants) and to make noise like thunder to intimidate enemies. Pachydermions have very good senses of smell and hearing, but poor eyesight. Their tusks grow continuously, so they wear them down intentionally. They use them for digging, defense, debarking trees, marking trees, and anything else. They are left- or right-tusked much the way humans are left- or right-handed, and their dominant tusk is usually shorter. Pachydermions use cosmetics to protect their sensitive skin and to regulate heat. Their ears also help regulate temperature. Their ears can be flapped to alleviate their overheating. Pachydermions can stand for ages. They can swim well. Pachydermions will not desecrate holy ground. They are good with arts and sciences, and they are known for removing obstacles (figuratively and literally) and for creating them to ward or test others. They can weakly control clouds--shaping them or causing rain. They always know which direction is which. Pachydermions will sense their own death coming if it is natural, and then they will go off to die alone. |
| Weaknesses | Pachydermions are scared of mice. The skin around their mouths and ears is paper thin. |
| Culture | Pachydermions live in matriarchal herds. The males tend to go off on their own, sometimes in small groups. They like to fight in a friendly fashion, but they do have dominance rituals involving trunk movements, ear movements, and stamping. Their herd groups are very structured. Children enjoy playing in mud. Pachydermions use cosmetics to keep cool and to protect their skin, but also to indicate their rank in the herd. They also use their trunks for many social functions: they shake trunks like humans shake hands, they wrestle with them, and they nuzzle with them. They also kiss trunks like humans kiss hands. If they drape their trunks over their tusks, it is a show of affection. In the ancient past, the pachydermions swore fealty to the Emperor of Tara'hin upon his birth. Pachydermion sometimes peel off from the herd and go "rogue," usually after a psychotic break, making them very dangerous. The females only leave the herd to find a mate, typically. Dabusenese pachydermions tend to pace themselves, while Taggaran pachydermions tend to work straight through a project. Pachydermions are proverbially wise. |
