The Red Mask

It's a story about the futility of revenge and violence.

The hero's father is a retired gunslinger. A challenger comes, but his father won't face him. Under a full moon, the challenger kills the hero's mother to draw the father into a fight, then kills the father at dawn. The hero vows revenge, and trains for years for the skills to become the best gunslinger in the land. He kills a hundred men and gains a reputation for wearing a red bandanda like gunslinger of legend. After much searching he finds the man who killed his mother and father, but that man is retired. Under a full moon, he murders the man's wife to bring the retiree back into one last duel. At dawn the next day, he slays the retired gunslinger, and realizes what he has become as the old gunslinger lies bleeding on the ground, laughing in despair. His heart unfreezes. He retires in that moment and tries to live a virtuous life, but the previous red mask had a son and he's too late to break the cycle.
