The mirror allows them to see and remember their true selves, allowing them to return to their regular forms. The watches tell them when they are fated to die, and the serpents carry their souls. Mami Watas can enter the Dream Realm of anyone who has one of their possessions in order to communicate with them. When they come ashore, they seek people to make into their followers, offering them good fortunes. Because of their sexual appetites, they demand fidelity of their sexual partners, but reward them with fated paths that lead to good lives. They spend at least an Age in their underwater realms, luring people in, before seeking followers on land. Their followers wear red and white and dance to please the Mami Watas. If a Mami Wata is found unawares while she is tending her hair, she will flee for fear it will reveal too much to the interloper. Anyone she brings to her realm under a river will be given the chance to earn a good path and a chance to leave. Those who fail will find misfortune. |
